Chapter 2
(Russhell)
I woke up early as the dawn's light flashed through my windows. I lifted myself up from my bed and looked into the mirror I had on my wall. My hair was a mess as usual and I had to comb it thoroughly before realizing something. Cat. Quickly I finished with my hair and tail, and went to see if Cat was still asleep.
I opened the door to the room Cat was staying in and sighed in relief. She wasn't up yet. Closing the door quietly, I went into my tiny kitchen, just across from my bedroom. My house is a tree house after all, so its smaller than the ground houses, but safer from the wolves.
A thought crashed into my brain and I squeezed my eyes shut to try and stop the flow of memories. It didn't help, it only made it worse.
"Come on, Russ!" Lukela laughed as we ran through the forest. I laughed and picked up my speed. No way was he beating me! We ran past the trees and it was like nothing had changed, and we were safe. The moonlight shone down on us and I was way ahead.
"Luke! Hurry up!" I said before looking back. A loud howl burst through my ears and I froze before bolting in the direction I had last seen Luke. Thoughts flew in my head but I pushed them aside. All that mattered was Lukela living on. The wolves howls got louder and I flattened my ears against my skull to deafen the noise.
"Luke!" I yelled again. Foxes can't cry like humans so I was whimpering his name. Then I saw the wolves. They were all crouched around a red furred body and I knew better than to stay any longer, so I fled. Back to my house and I cried away. My best friend....
I forced open my eyes to see Cat standing above me. I must have been crying since my clothes are wet. I brushed that thought aside and focused on Cat's face. She looked worried.
"Russhell! Are you okay?" She whispered to me. I merely nodded and got up, ignoring the fact that I had cried in front of her. Never again will I forget about Lukela, my only fox friend, but maybe I could make a new friend now, in Cat.
(Cat)
I woke to hearing sobs and was confused. No one is ever in my house...then I remembered where I really was. I jumped out of the bed and opened my door to see Russhell on the floor, writhing in agony. Something was terribly wrong, and her eyes were shut tight and she clawed at the wooden boards.
"Russhell! Are you okay?" I whispered urgently. She opened her eyes in shock and stared up at me. Russhell simply nodded and got up like nothing had even happened. I followed her into a kitchen and she made breakfast without speaking. She handed me a plate with a pancake, bacon and eggs. Finally, I decided to speak.
"Russhell, what happened back there?" I asked quietly as I poked at my plate. Her fox ears flicked forward, and her tail twitched before she answered.
"A memory," She murmured before promptly digging into her food. I simply stared at her for a moment, only to eat my food after. The meal was eaten in silence and I was wary to see what Russhell would do next.
A quick knock at the door had us holding our breath, and I watched Russhell open it, tail held tensely. A brown squirrel sat at the door, chattering away as it walked into the tree house. It's deep brown eyes captured mine and I recognized it. The squirrel turned away and dashed into the room I had slept in. Russhell rolled her eyes and closed the door, crossing her arms and leaning against the wall after.
"Hi there!" I heard Salali and I wasn't surprised to see her come out from the guest room. Her eyes caught mine again and she smiled shyly. "Are you going to stay?" She ask bluntly. Her face turned a rosy red and I almost laughed.
