Chapter 10

(Cat)

As we neared a particularly large creosote bush, a loud thought pushed itself in my head.

I know I'm used to this by now, but this one was filled with so much fear and left me gasping for breath as it took me by surprise. Russhell stopped to look at me, but didn't question what was wrong. She knew what this was like in her own way.

I closed my eyes and emptied my head, trying to contain the thought and decipher it. It was so masked with fear and panic that it was hard to think straight. Pushing across the fear and panic, I tried to push it away, and succeeded.

Don't come!

The voice repeated insistently. It was almost as if someone was aiming it to me. I pondered over this but the voice continued to yell it out in panic. I blocked it out and opened my eyes to meet Russhell's rich ones.

She gazed at me and nodded slowly. I opened my mouth but no sound escaped. There was nothing to say.

We stayed that way, in silence, just gazing across the empty desert land. Whoever thought that must have meant it as a warning, but it wasn't as if we would just leave them there. Who knows what could happen if we allowed that.

A rustle from a bush distracted Russhell, and I look up and swished my tail as the last person I had wanted to see come in view. Makar, in crocodile form, looked at us with wide eyes. We all shifted and he looked surprised.

"Well, this is a...." Makar started awkwardly. Russhell showed no emotion as she answered.

"Time for no games," Russhell finished for him. Makar closed his mouth in a tight line as he realized something.

"Where is Salali?" He asked suspiciously. Russhell rolled her eyes at him.

"Well, what do you know, I was about to ask the same thing," Russhell growled sarcastically. Makar's tanned face turned white and he looked shocked.

"What happened? How are we getting her back?" Makar shot at Russhell. Russhell's face fell a little as he stared at her for some plan.

What happened? How in the Anologisto world are we getting them back? She heard Russhell say, and inwardly felt Russhell sigh.

"I t-think they're nearby," I said quietly, too quiet for humans, but they looked at me in curiosity.

"How would you know?" Makar asked skeptically. "Your a new Anishifter in the first place, and so how would you know anything?" He said harshly. Russhell growled at him and he looked down at the desert sand.

 Don't come! Don't come!

(Fenris)

"Well, I suppose we have time," I said calmly, eyeing the three prisoners and enjoying their frightened faces. I turned to the desert iguanas and they shivered under my black eyed stare.

"You can leave," I growled at them, and they turned tail, leaving my companions and the prisoners. I lazily nodded to my team. "Chase them down," I said laughing. They nodded, and I turned to the captured animals.

"I guess I should introduce myself. I'm Fenris, which means mythical monster wolf," I smiled, showing my large, sharp canines. They shuddered, though the tiger barely flinched. I narrowed my eyes, knowing she would be a hard one to break.

The squirrel looked straight at me and chattered some squirrel nonsense. I grinned evily, and she flinched, but still continued to chatter under her breath.

"Your a lousy excuse for a wolf," it taunted. I curled my lip and wondered. A squirrel with the audacity to taunt a wolf? She would be interesting.

I held up her net and she curled into a protective ball. I felt the tiger and bucks stares on me and turned away. "Aw, such an adorable little squirrel," I said absentmindedly. "Such a shame if I had to eat you, hmm?"

The squirrel seemed to size me up, though obviously I could have easily have taken her down. I closed my eyes as a brown light flooded over her, and a brown haired girl now replaced her in the net.

"I'm not afraid of you," She trembled, glaring at me as  if it would make me disappear. I smirked in response and looked straight at her, knowing my black eyes would frighten her off. Her own eyes bugged and she chatter some nonsense under her breath. I set her net down and closed my eyes, willing for the shifting to start.

As I felt the black light wash over me, the squirrel girl instantly shifted too, getting the message that I could easily kill her in human form.

My ears pricked as I detected the sound of swishing on the sound. I raised my tail in triumph as I realized they had finally come.

(Makar)

I'm on absolute freaking out mood.

Salali is out there, probably feeling all alone, and its all my fault since I had to nod off. I left her in the hands of a thought to be safe group, and now look!

Now, here I am too, aiming for the creosote bush that the trail led to. The desert iguana smell is sickening to me, but overlapped with wolf and it makes for a rancid scent. The leaves on the bush swayed absentmindedly, as if they had no idea what trouble we were in. The branches seemed to part and I walked inside.

I saw a pitch black wolf staring at me, with deep pools of eyes that held no depths. Behind him was a defiant looking tiger, a cowering buck and...Salali! A torrent of relief flowed through my veins, and I sighed, obviously glad.

I was jolted out of my thoughts as a deep growl came from the wolf. I stood my ground and lashed my tail, showing I meant business. Inwardly I thought loudly, come, now! Don't be late you guys! I kept a trained eye on the wolf and he rolled his eyes and sat.

Now, I know better than to sit while a crocodile his staring at you, planning to take you down no matter what. This wolf must not have nearly enough experience with crocodiles, since we are deadly animals with a sharp bite.

I can only hope this plan works.

(Russhell)

We have to do this, or it could mean the end of us.

"Russhell, we should move in," Cat reminded me and I nodded, trusting her instincts. I don't really think cats have this just 'knowing' instinct, but maybe I was wrong about them. Foxes and cats are comparable, but this seems to be something else.

I push the speculation away, and concentrate on the affair. Cat and I weave over the branches and odd twigs. I prick my  ears and swivel to receive any sound over then us. I hear a faint growl and we move on. Makar is only distracting whoever is in there, so hopefully he doesn't attack.

Cat and I slip in from behind, and Makar is talking loud enough that it masks our own sounds. They are still in animal form, and I almost gasped as I saw it was that wolf Teigra had beaten.

Cat and I used our claws to unlock cages and pulled the net using our teeth. The only problem was, we hadn't thought this far. Teigra and Buck would never be able to get through all those twigs and if they shifted their scent would change, while Cat and I were masked by a false scent of sand.

Desperation glued me to the ground as the wolf turned around, and stared straight at us. A grin stretched over his nasty face, and he howled, letting a throaty and loud one puncture the air. We stood frozen as reinforcements walked in, a faint spot of blood staining their paws.

"Welcome," the huge monster wolf growled at us.

-Yeah, sorry for the daily and the short chapter. That's why I made it into a part, because it was kind of well....short. I was kind of out of inspiration but this is what came out. Suspense!-   Moonflier
