Chapter 16

(Ainara)

I was not about to lead them to the Amberites, or whoever they called them.

I flew down to the tree house they were staying in, plan mapped out and in my mind. I would lead them to the Mirega River, which showed mirages and created much confusion. They would fall for it, obviously not being animals of flight.

I landed on a chair, the girl looking at me. Cat. The rest of the group emerged, seemingly harmless. Why they would want to find the Amberites, I had no idea. But they weren't about to do that.

"Is everyone ready to go to the Amberites?" I asked after I shifted, eyeing the strange group. Animals tend to stick around their own, much safer for them, unless they are loners naturally. Can't understand those ones.

"Ready! Yay!" The girl with the brown tail exclaimed excitedly. "I can't wait to meet the..the what?" Her tone changes into confusion quickly.

"The Amberites," I told her patiently. Mammals these days.

"Right!" She resumed her excitement. The girl with red hair eyed me suspiciously, obviously suspecting something as her red tail flicked from side to side. Fox. She would be harder to convince.

"We will travel in human form as it is easier to get around in it for your crocodile friend here," I said smoothly, the group agreeing with my terms.I led the way out of the tree house, and they followed me as I got them out of the village. Everything was going smoothly.

Until it didn't.

A thin whistling call went up into the air from nearby, and a bird came crashing down, blue footed and getting into a tangle on the ground. It shifted in a bright and brilliant blue light, leaving a speckled brown and white headed boy on the ground, struggling to get up. "That was a craaaazzzzy ride, those drafts were like gohpers sliding up a rainbow!"

I groaned inwardly. Bobby. That crazy blue footed bird that drove everyone up into the sky. He was a good guardian though, no one could understand what he was trying to say.

"Gophers sliding up a rainbow?" The brown tailed mammal asked him. "What does that mean?"

"Look, it's great to see you again Bobby, but we have to go," I tell him off sternly. The kid looks at me.

"Where ya'll going?" Bobby inquired, eyeing up as he stands upright awkwardly, looking like he should be uncomfortable, but isn't.

"To find the Kohaku people!" Brown tail piped up. Uh oh.

Bobby is the guardian of the portal that led to them! And now she starts talking about them as if its normal and an easy everyday conversation to have with a stranger. He's no ordinary creature, I would say he cracked last in his family out of the egg. If he was born bird first. If not, thats the oddest Anishifter I have and probably ever will meet.

(Maker)

I have decided to simply watch and see what this bird is up to.

I mean, got to make sure there is no competition for him liking Salali. He looks younger, maybe by a year or two, but that still doesn't mean anything. Birds and squirrels don't mix, first of all. And second.., there is none. The first is more important anyways.

"The Kohaku people! Fine choice of your rocks, group of strange looking walruses! I am the guardian of them," The strange boy proclaimed proudly. I put a confused look on my face. Walruses?

"You're the guardian? Where are they?!" Cat asked anxiously, moving forward to the boy.

"I, Bobby, the magnificent blue footed bird, will show you, if you can answer the riddle. If you dig a tunnel on a palm tree, how long is it?" Bobby asked us very seriously.

"You can't dig tunnels on trees," Russhell pointed out to him. Bobby gasped.

"Don't tell the moles that." He stated cryptically, started off and hobbling oddly as he walked. Cat started off behind him, but I didn't trust this guy.

"I don't think we should go," I announced firmly to the group, surveying them together. The girl leading us nodded her head in agreement. Wait, someone agreed with me?

Salali gave me no time to celebrate this victory. "I. Don't. Care, we are going there anyways, why not travel with him? He may be a nut, but I trust him well enough." She whirled around and skipped after the others.

"Your friends are making a mistake," The bird girl stated ominously. "You shouldn't be doing this."

"Probably not, but I'm a crocodile. I don't listen to what others have to say, let alone take their advice," I told her, walking after my friends. I wonder if that was dramatic enough an exit, maybe I should have swished my tail or bared my teeth. Should've thought of that.

~I'm trying to get back into it. It's hard. Wish I hadn't gone for so long as I did. Oh well. You waited two months for around 900 words. Eek. At least it's only a part 1. A short one~ Moonflier
