"Mr. Ra..."
And even before Mavis could even utter a word or do anything to mend the situation, she realized Jasmine had already fixed her gaze upon Raleigh.
LATE.
TOO LATE.
IT'S TOO LATE.
At this point, Mavis realized that only luck can save her from it. The least she could do now is pretend that nothing out of ordinary is happening around her although the shortness in her breathing and the unusual sweating of her palms say otherwise.
While Mavis was saying her prayers in her head, hoping that a miracle would come down on her and make any one of them disappear from the scene, Jasmine suddenly stood up, still with eyes fixed on Raleigh. Then, she spoke.
"You."
And without even making sense to whatever Jasmine was trying to imply by saying "You", she immediately dragged Mavis by the arm outside of the Cafe. Clueless, Mavis is yet to find out whether that's the miracle she was waiting to happen, or the unfolding of the disastrous situation she was always trying to avoid since the start of the semester.
The moment they stepped out of the Cafe, Jasmine turned to face Mavis with the unusual expression on her face. Mavis, in anticipation, can't even ask if she's okay. She doesn't want to preempt what might happen. And even more so, she doesn't want to be the one to say anything first as she might say something that she shouldn't.
"Okay. Okay. so, here goes."
Mavis just stayed put but in her head, a ton of question are already exploding like fireworks.
"You don't need to say anything. I know.", asked Jasmine.
Mavis wasn't sure if that was supposed to be a trivial statement...or Jasmine's cue for Mavis to confess everything. Regardless, Mavis knew she needed to still give her 'luck' one more shot.
"What do you mean?", answered Mavis, trying to look clueless.
"I'm sorry."
What? Did she just say sorry? What for? And what does she mean 'she knows'? Mavis now has a lot of things to process in her head, far more than the ones she initially has before Jasmine dragged her out of the cafe.
"I'm so sorry! Before you say anything, let me explain myself first!", insisted Jasmine.
Oh, so now I'm 90% sure that this has something to do with the purse. For some reason, Mavis suddenly felt uncomfortable with the idea that she'd finally know what really happened with the purse, although deep down inside, she knew it wasn't anything different than Jasmine's other encounters in the club.
"Look, if it's about the purse, there's nothing to explain, okay?", she was lying. She needed an explanation but for some odd reason, she just couldn't find the guts to hear it yet.
Jasmine looked even more apologetic. That expression was enough for Mavis to confirm what Jasmine's thoughts were about. At least, for now, Mavis can rest on the idea that Jasmine doesn't know anything about the events that transpired a couple of weeks ago with the rest of the other IDEA heirs.
"You know what? This could still work.", said Jasmine, now her expression jumped from being weirdly in panic, to almost positively ecstatic. Before Mavis could even react to yet another one of Jasmine's trivial statements, again, Jasmine dragged her, this time, going back inside the cafe.
Raleigh was already on his seat, sipping his usual americano while checking something on her tablet. He didn't even move an inch when Jasmine and Mavis returned to their seats.
