Chapter 27

Silence.

Deafening silence.

Suffocating silence.

Everything was at a standstill.

Even the hands of time seemed to have stopped within that very room that was once filled with so much laughter.  All because of one question that was finally spoken out loud after being kept hidden for so long.

"Did you or did you not know...that all those times...I was in love with him to?"

Even when both of them knew perfectly well that the time has finally arrived for things to come out in the open, still, there was that lingering hope for things to have just gone back to how they were before. Looking at each other's eyes that screamed of desperation to find an exit button and just disappear right in the middle of an almost vacuum-like bedroom, both of them had thought of just laughing it all off and pretend that what just happened was nothing more than a bad prank...but neither of them had the guts to break the silence, say anything, move an inch...nor even look away.

It was because they knew. They knew exactly what their hearts had been desperately begging to say and hear for the longest time. It was only a question of who wanted to let go of the burden more.

"Please...don't hate me."

Mavis' thoughts just went blank. It felt as if she got sucked up in a void. She couldn't seem to think of anything else besides the sound of Jasmine's voice while she uttered those words. It kept repeating like a broken record. She felt a growing pain in her chest moving all the way to her stomach. She wanted to throw up. She couldn't explain exactly what she was feeling at that moment, all she was sure of was it was not the response she would have wanted to hear from Jasmine. Mavis felt like the years of hardwork and effort she put into building that version of herself is about to crumble. The skeletons she kept are starting to peek their way out of her closet. She knew there was only one way she can keep herself from falling apart...

"Then...lie to me."

Jasmine felt like her heart froze. She raised her head and set her gaze upon Mavis. Her expression was something Jasmine had never seen before. The look in her eyes was piercing cold. It was hostile. Jasmine felt as if she was looking at a whole new different person.

"What...do you...want me to say?", Jasmine's voice trembled as she uttered every word. She knew that one more word from Mavis and she could no longer hold back her tears...

"Anything...

...Make me believe...

...that my only best friend in this world...

...the only person I'll never hurt in any way...

...will never plan to hurt me...deliberately."

Jasmine broke down. She started sobbing uncontrollably.

Hearing those words was something Jasmine could not have prepared for no matter how many times she tried rehearsing this moment in her head. She knew that this day would come eventually. She just didn't know that Mavis would respond this way. She couldn't think of anything else to say but...

"I'm sorry..."

Mavis felt like she just got thrown deep into a dark abyss. Those few minutes felt like eternity. She could not find any strength to go to Jasmine and comfort her—the way she always do ever since. Having confronted Jasmine and seeing her cry her heart out was painful enough for her to look at. Knowing that they might no longer be able to turn back to how they used to be was even more agonizing. And for the first time...Mavis walked away.
