Mavis was dumbfounded. It's as if Knight will never run out of surprises under his sleeve. She could never seem to predict any of his moves. She's wondering whether being this peculiar is something that all 'privileged' kids share in common considering how utterly weird some of the people she knows in IDEA are. She was torn between putting Knight under the category of extremely bored individual or overly creative artist who thinks in a borderline psychopathic way.
"Seems like you have more questions now, don't you?", Knight said while sipping the rest of his coffee and looking at the gorgeous view, pretending to not notice Mavis' awestruck expression directed towards him.
"I don't understand.", she said almost inaudibly.
"You will...once you made your choice.", he said, still without looking at her. "It's just gonna be one or the other."
Mavis didn't say a word for quite a while. Her silence is starting to break his defenses thinking that it might be putting way more burden on her than he had intended. He thought that maybe the options were a bit too constricting giving her way more stuff to worry about. He was wondering if maybe he should have just been straightforward about the scandal and why they wanted her in the management team than playing this silly game.
"Fine... you don't have to do this...I was just really--", he said but even before he could finish what he was about to say, Mavis cut him off.
"Exactly.", she said looking even more puzzled. "I don't have to make a choice because quite frankly...this...", she said as she slid down the hood that was covering her head as if gesturing to the hoodie as a reference. "This gives me the upper hand...between us two..."
Knight looked at her not knowing whether to feel provoked or bemused. Mavis always seems to say the words that won't give him the complete advantage. It's as if he's always in a game of chess whenever he talks to her. He realized that she's right though. He doesn't really have much against her except for the silly question game she failed to answer at the expense of his long time well-hidden secret. He may have won the battle, but he most certainly lost the war if it will be taken from that perspective. Although he knows that Gina can easily mend the situation and that Mavis is bound to know about it anyway, it just dawned on him just how stupid his strategy was.
"You're right."
She knew right then that he finally understands where she's coming from and the point she's getting at. But what she couldn't understand is why he would go to that length of revealing to her something that could potentially put him at risk.
He was just silent. Mavis looked at him and somewhat felt guilty. What made him do it? What was he playing at?, she thought.
After a couple more minutes of silence, he finally spoke.
"You're probably thinking of how stupid of a decision that was or why I did that.", he asked. "A revelation like that can put my whole career at stake, yet I gambled it knowing the consequences."
He was spot on as far as her thoughts are concerned. She most certainly was overflowing with questions and curiosity she could barely hold herself back from bombarding him with questions. She clenched her fist and tried to hold everything in.
"I'll just pretend you're not judging me with your silence.", he said this time wearing a somewhat faint smile. "Look, I'm not really good at comforting people. I don't even know how to do the same to myself at the very least. I just almost always try to escape and ride off somewhere far and secluded whenever it gets too much." he added, with such a serious tone Mavis could swear she felt as if another person was talking. "I don't know exactly what you're struggling with. All I know is that, whatever that is, it's certainly something that you very much rather not talk about with others."
