"What do you mean?" I asked, even though it was pretty obvious. Michael shoved the book away and walked towards the window, obviously fuming. Lincoln and I followed right behind him.
"Someone got here before us and took the map, that's what I mean." Michael said, gripping the bill of his hat tightly.
"Who do you think has it then?" Lincoln asked, leaning against the window sill while Michael gazed out the window. Something in his eyes changed and he pointed out the window, backing up. He jogged out the room and Lincoln and I looked out the window to see T-bag limping away from the building we were in. "Son of a bitch is still alive. Come on."
He took off in the direction Michael went and we both left the building to see Michael walking towards T-bag.
"Hey!" Michael shouted and T-bag turned around, eyes wide when he recognized Michael. Lincoln snuck up on the other side of him and wrapped his arm around his neck.
"What the-" T-bag tried to fight, but Lincoln held him tight and we all walked away from the Municipal building. "Let go of me!" T-bag hissed.
"What you gonna do, scream?" Lincoln joked, slamming him on the hood of a car.
"What the hell did you do to your hand?" I asked, grimacing at T-bag's bandaged left hand. It was limp and lifeless, but seemed to be sewed on. T-bag bucked up towards me, but Lincoln placed his hand on his throat and squeezed.
"Where's the map, Theodore?" Michael asked calmly, slipping his hands in his pocket. T-bag choked and hit Lincoln, struggling to breathe. Lincoln took the pressure off a bit so that he could speak. T-bag chuckled and licked his lips, not answering.
"Maybe he needs a little...encouragement." I said, leaning forward on the car. I grabbed T-bag's right, functional wrist and pretended to admire it. All of the men stared at me, wondering what I was going to do. I looked down at T-bag and smiled, caressing his palm. "Let's see here. I don't think you need this finger." I grabbed his pinky and snapped it back, eliciting a scream from him.
A thrilling feeling, almost pleasure, rushed over me. I grinned, enjoying his pain and I wanted to hear it again.
"Who has the map, hon?" I asked, cocking my head. T-bag glared at me and said nothing.
"Where is the fucking map?" Lincoln growled, raising his fist.
"Hmmm...maybe I'll try this again." I said and twisted his broken pinky, a blood-curdling scream erupting from his throat.
"Alright, Mel, that's enough." Michael said, but I could barely hear him. Torturing T-bag took me back to when I was killing the Company's people and I realized I enjoyed hearing their pain. I continued twisting his finger, laughing when I saw tears start to leak from the corners of his eyes.
"Melanie!" Lincoln raised his voice and yanked me away from T-bag. I frowned and annoyance washed over me at his action. He was staring at me as if I were a stranger, looking from T-bag to me with a look of....horror? Lincoln grabbed T-bag's collar and brought his face close.
"Easy, easy now." T-bag warned, his eye flitting upwards. Lincoln looked up to see some cops eyeing us.
"Last time. Where is it?" Michael asked, wiping the sweat off of his forehead.
"I don't have it." T-bag answered, wincing in pain as he brought his good turned bad hand close.
"Bullshit. We saw you walking from the building." I snapped, moving forward. Michael's arm shot out, stopping me.
"It was gone when I got there." T-bag argued. "Now get your pooch away from me and I'll tell you everything I know." he said, pushing Lincoln away from him. Lincoln went to grab him again, but Michael put his hand on his shoulder and pulled him away.
"Let's see what he has to say." Lincoln nodded and stepped back, letting Michael get the info out of T-bag.
"It's the kid. He has it, alright. We made a deal. He told me he would dig and I told him where he could find the map. It's the kid." T-bag rushed out, breathing hard from the pain I caused him. Before Michael could answer, Lincoln grabbed T-bag's hair and pulled his head back, leaning close.
"What kid?" his deep voice made those two words seem bone-chilling. T-bag continued breathing hard, not answering. Lincoln yanked his head back some more. "What kid?"
"Tweener."
"I swear to god if you're lying to us-"
"He's telling the truth." All eyes turned to me. I sighed and crossed my arms. "Before we went into the Municipal building, I saw him out here talking to Tweener."
"And you're just now saying something?" Michael asked incredulously.
"How was I supposed to know that those two no brainers were gonna steal the map?" I argued, pointing to T-bag.
"Tread carefully, dearie." T-bag whispered and Lincoln immediately turned to him.
"Or else what?" T-bag stared at Lincoln for a moment before looking back over to me.
"Nothing." Lincoln nodded, walking backwards.
"That's what I thought." he said before looking at his brother. "What now?"
"Now, he takes us to Tweener." Michael answered. T-bag's mouth opened and closed before opening again.
"I already told you he has the map. I don't need to lead you to him too. Do that yourself." T-bag snapped, getting off the car. The three of us looked at him, as if he had a choice in the matter. When he realized that, he sighed. "Fine. Follow me." He started walking in the opposite direction of the Municipal building and we followed closely behind, ignoring the curious looks of the officers across the street.
"Mel." Lincoln called out to me in a low voice. I looked behind of me, and Lincoln walked faster to be next to me. "What was that about earlier?" he asked lowly, glancing behind of him to make sure Michael didn't hear. I frowned.
"What are you talking about?" I wondered, genuinely confused. Lincoln gave me a 'don't play stupid' look.
"When you were breaking T-bag's fingers. It was almost like...almost like you enjoyed it." he said, crinkling his nose. I looked away, my heart suddenly picking up speed. When I didn't answer, Lincoln glanced down at me, narrowing his eyes. "Mel?"
"Drop it, Linc." I said sharply, not wanting to talk about the fact that I enjoyed watching people suffer. I felt a sense of superiority when the people who did me wrong were subject to my torture and I thrived off their pain. But Lincoln didn't need to know that. He didn't know this side of me and I didn't want him to ever know that deep down inside, I was a monster.
