"Everybody cease fire!" Mahone ordered. The gunfire died down and Lincoln jogged over to where I was, fire in his eyes.
"Let him go or I swear I will put a bullet in your brain." Lincoln growled, cocking his gun. Mahone tsked, shaking a finger.
"Not before I put one in your boy. Now, let's discuss this like adults, shall we?" he asked, still holding the gun the LJ's head. LJ's face was red and he was breathing fast, obviously scared.
"Dad?" Lincoln gripped his gun tightly, veins bulging on his arms.
"I'm gonna get you, okay? Don't worry." he said.
"Don't make promises you can't keep." Mahone taunted.
"Shut up!" Lincoln yelled, holding his gun up to shoot the agent.
"Dad, no!" LJ cried out as Mahone dug the gun deeper into his temple. I put my hand on Lincoln's arm, eyes still on LJ.
"Baby, don't." I whispered, heart pounding relentlessly. I could hear police sirens and my eyes shot to Michael, who had walked next to me, along with Abruzzi. We were standing in front of my car, which surprisingly endured the gunfire.
"Now, either you give yourselves up or I take LJ in for the murder of one of my guys." Mahone bargained.
"What?!" I shrieked. He wanted us to choose our freedom or LJ's freedom? "That's not even fair. How do we know you won't just take us all in?" I asked, keeping my hand on my gun. Mahone shrugged.
"You'll just have to trust me." I scoffed, not taking his bullshit. The sirens got louder and Michael seemed to be thinking hard. If the cops came, then it would be too late for us. We had to make a decision and fast.
"We can come back for LJ." Michael told us and I almost shot him.
"Are you crazy? I'm not leaving my son!" I argued and then turned to Lincoln. He had this look on his face that he only had when he was scared. And I knew he was scared to go back to prison because they wouldn't hesitate to execute him, like they wanted to. "Lincoln?"
"Do you have a plan?" Lincoln asked and Michael was silent. "Do you have a plan, Michael?!" Lincoln raised his voice and Michael nodded. Lincoln looked at LJ, defeat in his eyes. "LJ, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." LJ nodded, understanding, but I wasn't having it.
"We are not leaving LJ." I said, tears welling up in my eyes.
"Mom, it's okay-"
"No, it's not! I can't lose you again." I said, biting my lip. A bunch of cop cars pulled up and Michael opened the driver's seat, getting into my car.
"We need to go, like now!" Lincoln said and I walked forward, reaching out for LJ. Strong arms pulled me back and I fought against them.
"Mel, stop fighting me! We need to leave!" Lincoln yelled in my ear. Abruzzi took my gun and him and Lincoln exchanged glances. Abruzzi nodded and he held his guns up. When I realized what he was doing, it was too late. He was sacrificing himself.
"No!!!!" I screamed, reaching out to him or LJ. It didn't matter to me at this point. "LJ!" I cried out, tears streaming down my face. I banged my fists against Lincoln's arms as he picked me up from behind and carried me to the car. After that, everything seemed to go in slow motion.
Abruzzi fired at the police officers and the FBI agents, a smile on his face. My screams came out deep and raw and I kicked and punched, but Lincoln wasn't letting go. Mahone dragged LJ into his vehicle and drove off, just as the officers fired back at Abruzzi, bullets hitting him like a training dummy. Lincoln shoved me in the backseat and hopped in the front, just as Michael was driving off.
"LJ!" I cried, banging my fists against the window. "John! LJ!" Sobs wracked my chest and I pounded my fists on the seat. "I hate you, I hate you, I hate you." I chanted, not knowing if I was talking to Michael for coming up with the idea or Lincoln for going along with it. I cried until I couldn't cry anymore and when I finally ran out of tears, I was quiet.
I refused to talk to Michael or Lincoln the entire ride and they didn't try to get me to talk. Even when we finally reached Utah and got out the car, I didn't speak to them. What they did seemed almost unforgivable. Michael had parked in a place that semi hid the car, but not in a way where we wouldn't be able to spot it.
"Where should we go first?" Lincoln asked Michael. Michael had his hands on his hips and he was looking around.
"Somewhere to freshen up." Michael turned to me and I glared at him. "Do you need to go to the bathroom or anything?"
"Don't talk to me." I answered, folding my arms across my chest. Michael looked at Lincoln and Lincoln looked at me.
"Look, babe, I know you're mad, but we did what we had to do."
"Mad? I'm not mad. I'm fucking hurt that you would just leave our son in the hands of those people! He's going to be tried for murder!" I yelled. "Murder!" Lincoln huffed and wiped his mouth.
"Michael has a plan and he's going to get LJ out before anything happens, so just trust him." I turned to Michael.
"This is all your fault. If anything happens to LJ, I blame you!" I growled, and turned back to Lincoln. "And you!"
"Melanie, quit acting like a big baby, okay?" Lincoln said and that's when I snapped.
"A big baby?" My chest tightened at his words and I could tell he wanted to take them back. "Maybe you should've told me to stop acting like a baby when you left me and our son alone for five years and I cried for months." I put my hand on my chin. "Oh wait, you weren't there." Lincoln puffed his cheeks.
"I left to protect you." he said lowly. I could tell he was getting angry, but I didn't care at his point.
"Oh, really? From who? Yourself?" I mocked. Lincoln's eyes flashed and for a second, I was scared of what he might do.
"From the Company, okay?! I made a deal with them and it went bad so I left because I didn't want them coming after you!" Lincoln yelled and I started laughing. I wasn't amused at what he said, but I couldn't help it.
"The Company? You dumb ass. I was a part of the company since the day I met you and Michael." I said, opening my arms out. Both of their jaws dropped. Michael didn't know that part.
"What?" Lincoln whispered. I bit my lip and raised my eyes to the sky.
"You wanna know why I got close to you guys? Because my parents needed to get close to your parents. So the easiest way to do that was for us to be friends." I explained and Lincoln's hands balled into fists.
"Was it fake?" I frowned.
"Was what fake?"
"Our relationship, dammit!" Lincoln shouted, making me jump.
"No, it wasn't fake. It's not fake. It was at first, but then it became real and--" Lincoln's chuckle stopped me.
"It became real? I did everything for you, everything to keep my family safe and together and all this time you worked for them?"
"I don't anymore-"
"--all this time, you worked for those monsters? I made a family with you." Lincoln said in an accusing tone.
"Yeah and guess what? You left us, just like your sorry ass father did." I said angrily, walking towards him until I was in his face. "You wanna know something, Linc? You're exactly like him." With that I turned around and walked off, not caring where I went, as long as I was away from them.
