Based on the time I sent that message out, I knew I only had a few minutes to search this entire building for LJ. Since Amir said something about him being downstairs, that was going to be the first place I looked. The hallways were empty so I slipped by easily, and I remembered where the closest staircase was and headed in that direction. My eyes flitted all around as I continued downstairs and when I finally reached, I frowned.
This was way too easy. Even without the guards there, cameras and traps were always laid out in case something like this happened. They were letting me find my son. Which meant--
"Going somewhere?" A deep voice asked from behind me and I ducked just in time to avoid getting smashed in the head with a gun. I stood in a defensive stance and held my hands up, egging him on.
"Come on." I waved him over and as he ran towards me, I heard heavy footsteps behind me. I focused my attention on his neck and flipped up, swinging my foot, connecting it to his jugular. He stumbled back, grabbing his throat.
"Get her!" I heard someone yell from behind me. I turned around and punched one of the guards, causing him to fall back on another one. A shot rang out and I heard the whiz of a bullet fly next to my ear. My heart started pounding as I reminded myself of the lessons I'd learned on how to dodge a bullet. I ran forward, ducking as the guard shot at me again and when I was close enough, I grabbed his arm and snapped it in half.
"AHH!" He screamed out and tried to stab me with the knife that was in his other hand, but I grabbed it and sliced his throat open, his blood spilling all over my hands.
"Have fun in hell." I whispered, yanking the knife away. I jumped and threw the knife behind me, nailing it in the first guard's eye. When I was sure they were all down, I ran towards the cells and started looking for LJ. "Come on, come on." I muttered to myself as I peered into the cells, but not seeing him.
"Hey! What's going on!?" I stopped in my tracks and my heart flipped when I heard the voice that I'd dreamed of since I last heard it.
"LJ?" I called out, my heart beating fast with anticipation. I walked towards where I heard his voice and it was silent for a second.
"Mom?" LJ's voice held a confused tone and I sprinted to where I heard his voice the loudest and found his cell, which was all the way in the back. I stopped running and slowed to a walk as soon as I saw him. His light brown hair was matted and greasy and his clothes were dirty, as if he hadn't changed them in a while. Dry and fresh blood caked his shirt and his cheeks, but his green eyes lit up when he spotted me. "Mom!" His voice cracked and tears welled up in my eyes as I walked to his cell.
"Oh my god, LJ." I whispered, a sob building up in the back of my throat. I fumbled with the keys I'd stolen and unlocked his cell. He ran out and almost knocked me over when he hugged me.
"Mom, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." LJ sobbed, gripping my shirt tightly. Tears spilled over and streamed down my face as I held my son, afraid that if I let go, he would disappear again.
"I thought you were dead this entire time." I said through my sobs. I threaded my fingers through his hair and he squeezed me tight, still saying how sorry he was. "Why are you sorry?" LJ looked up at me, his green eyes, which were identical to his father's, distraught.
"They made me go along with it or else they were going to hurt you and dad. I had to pretend I was dead." Another sob escaped his lips and he covered his mouth and squeezed his eyes shut. "I'm so sorry." he whispered and I held his face in my hands. He was a little bit taller than me, so I had to look up.
"LJ, look at me." He kept his eyes closed and I shook him a little. "Look at me, son." When he finally looked at me, I used my thumbs to wipe his tears away. "Do not ever blame yourself for what happened, okay? I know how these people think and how they work and you are innocent in all of this, you hear me?" LJ nodded and sniffed.
"God, mom, I've missed you so much!" LJ hugged me again and a smile came to my face, my heart squeezing at the fact that my son was alive and well.
"I never stopped thinking about you." I whispered, kissing his forehead. He pulled away and smiled, brushing my hair out my eyes.
"Did you change your hair because you're on the run?" he asked, holding a strand of my hair in his hand. I nodded.
"You know about everything?" I asked.
"Yeah. Uncle Mike broke you and Dad out, with some other cons and Aunt Sara is being blamed for it." His eyes traveled over my head and widened. "Mom, look out!" He yelled, pushing me out the way, just as Donovan's hammer came crashing down. We rolled to the side and Donovan came at us again.
"LJ, run to the stairs!" I yelled, picking up a broken pipe as a weapon. LJ hesitated, looking at me and then Donovan. "I'll be right behind you. Run!" When I reassured him of that fact, he turned and took off towards the stairs, taking two at a time.
"You really think you're going to leave here with him?" Donovan asked, circling around me. I made sure to keep my back away from him so that my eyes would be on him the entire time.
"Yes, I do." I launched myself forward and swung my pipe, connecting it to Donovan's head. He crumpled to the ground, writhing in pain. I knew that this would only stun him, so I took advantage of the time I had and ran to the stairs, following behind my son.
"You're going to pay for that!" I heard Donovan threaten as I caught up with LJ.
"Which way do we go?" LJ asked, looking left and right. I saw light coming from in front of us and I sprinted forward, waving my hand for him to follow. We burst through the door and ended up outside the facility. LJ made a pained sound and I turned to see him bending over, groaning loudly.
"LJ! What's wrong?" I ran to him and placed my hand on his back. He shook his head and kept his eyes closed.
"My eyes. They never let me go outside, so my eyes got used to the dark." He explained, opening his eyes just a little so that they could get adjusted. "I'll be fine, I promise." I nodded and reminded myself that he was sixteen, not five. I looked around and squinted when I saw a car parked a few feet in front of us.
"That's my car." I muttered, lightly jogging. "That's my car! LJ, follow me!" I called out, full out running to the car. When I turned to see if LJ was still behind me, I saw guards burst through different doors with guns trained on us. LJ made it to the car and I pulled it open to find that it was unlocked, with the keys in the ignition. "Let's go!" LJ hopped in and I started the car, just as Amir walked out the building. His eyes held so much anger, I was surprised none of the trees caught on fire.
"Take them out." I heard him order and I put the car in reverse and peeled out quickly. Bullets sprayed the area and luckily, none came through the windows as I maneuvered my way through the forest. When I was sure I wouldn't get hit, I stopped, put the car in drive, and took off towards the only road in and the only road out. As I drove farther away from the building, the tension in my shoulders continued to build until I started hyperventilating.
"Mom?" LJ's voice broke my concentration and I saw his eyes widen. "Mom! Stop the car!" I pulled off to the side and put the car in park, my breathing still unstable. My chest tightened and I gripped the steering wheel so hard that my knuckles turned white. LJ put his hand on my back and rubbed. "Breathe, mom. Come on, it's okay." Tears filled my eyes and I started sobbing uncontrollably.
Everything just came crashing down on me and I just broke. LJ's apparent death, Lincoln's execution, breaking out of prison, being on the run, changing my appearance, and so much more weighed me down and I couldn't stop crying. "I'm so sorry, LJ." I cried, covering my hands with my face.
"It's okay. Here, let me drive." LJ got out the car and reached back in, pulling me from the driver's seat to the passenger's seat. I guess it's a good thing he got his license before all of this happened. He hopped in the driver's seat and adjusted the mirrors before turning back to me. "Is this where you need to go?" he asked, pointing to the address in Tooele that I had written down. I nodded and he started the car and started driving.
I didn't realize I had cried myself to sleep until total darkness enveloped my vision.
