Chapter 1 - the fish has a name

-----

Warm sunlight was shining down upon my pale face as I sat on the highest branch of a tree, surrounded by a lake. My strawberry blonde hair swayed against the wind, brushing across my skin and the squirrels frolicked with the rabbits beside me.

The weather was beautiful today for the sky was as blue as the sea and the clouds were as white as snow and the birds chirped a wonderful melody.

I giggled under my breath as I placed another leaf on top of the pile of leaves that rested on the head of my friend, Gon Freecs. He sat still resembling a statue as he held onto the fishing rod with an iron grip. His relaxed shoulders were covered with leaves falling from the pile.

I stared at him, hoping to catch a reaction out of him, but his face was void of any emotion. I poked his cheek several times as I pouted. He was still facing towards the floating bait down below nevertheless his hazel brown eyes were now trained on me.

"I'm bored! We've been trying to catch this stupid fish for a week now and nothing's happening! Can I just jump in there and drag it out of the water with my bare hands?" I whined.

"Akane! Shh! You'll scare away the Lord of the Lake," Gon said in a hushed tone. "You have to be quiet and patient."

"I'm neither of those things," I said as I lightly rolled my eyes. "Why can't Aunt Mito just let you take the Hunter Exam without having to do this stupid task? She knows you're stubborn to the bone when it comes to getting what you want, so why does she have to make things so difficult?"

"She doesn't want me to leave. Besides, my dad caught the Lord of the Lake when he was my age so I want to do it too."

I groaned and waved my hands in the air. "Stupid fish. Just show yourself already."

-----

An hour passed and I am close to actually jumping into the lake and search for the stupid fish. To pass the time, I played with the rabbits and the squirrels. I fed them with the food that I brought with me and had a small picnic with them. Wanting to rest for I bit, I lied down on my back and stared up at the sky, humming a soft tune.

After a few minutes, I felt Gon perk up. I immediately sat up and focused my attention on the floating buoy attached to the fishing line.

It twitched, creating a ripple on the surface of the water, which made Gon hold his fishing rod tighter. Our eyes narrowed and our brows furrowed in anticipation. The floating buoy twitched again, creating more ripples, and my eyes gleamed with eagerness.

It's about time that stupid fish showed up.

The floating buoy sunk deep into the water and Gon stood up, letting out a shout. "Got him!" He leaned back to counter the force that pulled the fishing rod forward. Gon then ran around the tree to create some sort of pulley system.

"Do you need any help?" I asked.

"No, thank—Wah!"

He lurched forward so we both propped a foot against the tree and pulled the fishing rod backwards. Gon jumped, tagging me along as I held onto the rod for dear life, and swung around the tree.

Our weight and momentum slowly lifted the fish off the water as we continued to dangle around the tree. Finally, the monster of a fish erupted out of the water in all its glory. We roared in victory with big smiles plastered on our faces.
