chapter 9 - the three idiots

-----

"Son of a..." I muttered to myself as one of my wounds reopened. "I am so done with this stupid exam!"

A bunch of red butterflies appeared out of nowhere, taking me away from my thoughts. They hovered and rested over my bloodied shoulder, the others hovered over my other wounds.

Are these butterflies attracted to the smell of blood?

"Akane! You're alive!" a figure shouted at me as it hugged the life out of me.

"Ah! My wounds! Get off—Gon?" I asked, perplexed. "What are you doing here? And how did you find me?"

"I'm using these butterflies to track Hisoka down. I remembered that he was injured during the Third Phase," he explained.

I nodded my head in understanding. "Solid tactic. So, how are you going to steal his tag?"

"I thought of doing the same thing you did. Steal his tag while he's stealing his target's tag."

"Oh, that's a great plan! Wait, how did you know that's how I did it?" I should've sensed his presence, but why didn't I?

"I was there, but you ran off before I could say anything."

"Oh. Well, do you want me to help you out?"

"I think it's better if I do this alone. It would make it easier for me since I wouldn't have to worry about putting you in danger," he said as he smiled at me.

"Well, good luck to you, then! See you in the next phase?" I said to him as he stood up.

"Yeah, see you!"

He walked away and disappeared out of my sight. I sighed as I thought of the worst things that could happen to him during this phase.

Well, Gon's a tough kid. I should have a little more faith in him.

I was wandering through the forest when I found something that made my day.

In front of me are Tonpa and another candidate all bruised and tied up. There was a sign posted behind them saying, "Please do not feed!" They were on top of a huge boulder and were surrounded by these cute rodents. Some looked like tiny teddy bears while some looked like bunny rabbits.

I laughed out loud, clutching my stomach as I did so. Tears formed in my eyes and I wiped them away with my hand. "Man, what a sight to see! What the heck happened to you two?"

"It's those friends of yours, Kurapika and Leorio! When I get out of these bonds, I will come after them!" Tonpa shouted at me.

"I would understand that Leorio would do such a thing, but Kurapika? I wouldn't have guessed that he was behind this!" I laughed to myself.

I crouched down to pet the cute tiny teddy bears and rabbits that stared in confusion at the sight in front of them. I giggled as they ran around me in circles.

"H-Hey! Can you get me out of here? I will repay you if you do!" Tonpa said to me.

I stood up and rolled my eyes. "And allow you to continue doing everything you can to prevent us from being Hunters? You wish," I scoffed. "Well, I'll be off, then! See ya!" I waved my hand at them as Tonpa cursed at me.

----

Once again, I am wandering aimlessly in the forest. It's been hours since I last saw Tonpa and Gon, and I'm getting bored.
