chapter 2 - the tree will save us

-----

The captain looked at him in surprise. "How can you tell, boy?"

"The seagulls," I replied.

The captain just looked at us in confusion.

"And I can smell the storm from here," I muttered under my breath although the two didn't catch it because Gon was up the crow's nest and the captain stared at him in wonder.

Gon sniffed the air for a second before shouting out to the captain, "It's a huge storm that's coming! I can tell by the smell!"

The captain looked up to him with wide eyes. He must be thinking how kids like us knew these things.

Well, growing up near the sea would mean that you're prone to storms and tsunamis and other calamities. It's important that you are able to read, and hopefully, the weather. It's so that you'll know when not to wear your favorite outfit so that it will be spared from being drenched in the rain.

We were then told to go inside where we're safe from the storm. Unfortunately, a lot of the people aboard have the case of 'sea legs'.

As the ship rocked back and forth, due to the waves crashing against it, so did they. Some were retching and some were crying out for their mothers.

Seriously? These guys are going to be taking the Hunter Exam?

After the storm died down a bit, I checked up on Gon. He seemed to be all right since he's able to stand up on his feet and not stagger.

Actually, nobody's standing at all!

Almost everyone was on the floor, passed out. There were two people who looked okay: a blonde-haired boy, reading a book and resting comfortable on a hammock; and a man wearing a suit, complaining about a sour apple he was holding.

Gon and I helped this man with his overseas sickness by giving him some herbs. We also gave him some water, with the help of Katsuo, the sailor that was holding the box of apples a while ago.

"You four," the captain suddenly called out to us from the door, "Come with me."

He then led us to the room where the captain usually stays. "First, tell me your names."

"I'm Gon!" Gon said as he raised his hand.

"I'm Akane," I said with less enthusiasm.

"I'm Kurapika," the blonde-haired boy said.

"It's Leorio," the man wearing the suit said.

"Why do you want to become Hunters?" the captain asked us after a few moments.

Leorio pointed at the captain. "Hey! If you're not an examiner, you can't boss us around!"

"Just answer the question!" the captain said, annoyed.

"My dad is a Hunter," Gon piped up. "I left Whale Island because I want to know why my dad desired so much to be a Hunter." The captain seemed to be surprised when Gon said that his dad's a Hunter.

I followed Gon's lead so I also answered the question. "I'm looking for my brother. He said that he was going on a dangerous journey and if only I was a Hunter, like him, I could've gone with him. I want to look for him and prove to him that I can be a Hunter too."

"Hey, kids!" Leorio shouted at us. "You're not supposed to answer his question!"

"Why not?" "Why can't I tell him why I'm here?" Gon and I said simultaneously.
