chapter 11 - an eye for an eye

---

"We can't do that," Kurapika said, as he walked back towards us. "Leorio's condition is worsening. We have to take him to a doctor immediately."

"It's his fault. I warned him. Well, all you can do is pray that he holds out and until help arrives."

"There's got to be an antidote or something! It might be with Bourbon, but since we can't go anywhere near him without being bitten, we won't be able to find out," I said.

Gon's head suddenly perked up. I looked at him and his eyes widened in realization.

"Kurapika, Akane, look after Leorio-san. I'm sure we'll find some!" Gon said as he started walking towards Bourbon's body.

I grabbed his wrist. "If you're thinking about going anywhere near his body, I might as well be the one to do it. I don't want you to get hurt," I said as I looked at him straight in the eye.

"Akane, I'll do it. You're the one covered with wounds so you should step back." He then stretched his hand forwards, the snakes baring their fangs at him.

At the last second, I pulled his shirt back and took his place.

"Akane!"

Pain erupted all over my body as the snakes embedded their fangs on my skin. I bit my lip and started rummaging through the dead snake charmer's clothes and bag. The snakes started to wrap around me, constricting my movements. They coiled around my arms and legs, slowly stopping my blood flow.

The snakes hissed again and another person started searching the dead body beside me. I couldn't see the person exactly but I'm pretty sure it's Gon. He's the only other crazy person to do such an act to save a friend.

After a few seconds of searching, I let out a gasp as I found three syringes and a tag. I also heard Gon gasp as I felt him grab the bottle that contains the antidote.

"Found it! Kurapika!" We both screamed out as we threw the items to him. I kept the tag, though, so that we can use it as leverage against Ponzu later.

Gon then started falling backwards. I stepped away from the dead body with great difficulty as I caught him before he hit the ground. The adrenalin must've numbed the pain for a few moments because it all came crashing down on me. I groaned in exhaustion and agony as I can feel the poison flowing through my veins.

"Use it on Leorio and Akane. Hurry..." Gon croaked out.

"What...what are you talking about...idiot...there's more than...enough for all of us," I weakly scolded him as I crumpled to the ground, my legs failing to support me. My arms fell to my side, dropping Gon onto the floor with a thud.

Kurapika injected Leorio with the antidote. He then did the same to us after a few seconds.

"I don't believe it. They jumped into a nest of poisonous snakes to search for an antidote, not knowing if he had it?" Ponzu cried out in disbelief.

"The odds were in his favor. If you're going to poison someone, you'd need the antidote at hand as a bargaining chip," Kurapika said.

"Tch. That idiot...I try to save him from this...but he just ignores me and does it too!" I said once I feel my strength coming back to me.

I sat up and rubbed my sore arms. Gon did the same as he rubbed his head. I glared at him as he just smiled at me.

"Hey, do you have any sleeping gas left?" Gon suddenly asked Ponzu.
