The hall was empty. Nothing could prove the vampire's previous presence other than the telltale puddles of blood that smattered the tiles. All I could do was stand there in shock. The fiendish King was gone, along with my old friend. I felt numb all over, like I had frostbite. Guren came to a halt beside me. The running hadn't even seemed to have fazed him. Instead, he stood there next to me with his default expression plastered over his face: cold and detached curiosity.
"So," he looked around with a stygian eyebrow raised. "Where are they?"
Frustration built up inside of me. "I don't know!" I cried. It took supreme self-control to prevent myself from stomping around the corridor. "They should be here! They were just here!" I growled out of pure resentment for the whole situation.
"A vampire..." my mentor trailed off. "I suppose that means that we have more of them on the loose to deal with." He squinted around the floor, scrutinizing the leftover evidence from the vampire attack. Abruptly, he squatted to the ground a pointed out faint, almost imperceptible footprints trailed into the blood. Slight tracks skidded next to the impressions, indicating that someone had been lugged along. Mika, without a doubt. "They went that way," he informed me, brushing off his trousers and marching swiftly out of the rebel building. Left with no choice and a whole heap of apprehension, I chased after Guren.
