The winner of the contest is DJbird82 's Sky!
We make our way back to the den in silence, caught up in what had just been told to us.
Suddenly, Crow stops causing me to bump into him. He sniffs and his eyes narrow. He motions towards the den.
Someone is inside.
We both creep forward, peering in. A young gray she-wolf sits inside. Tears were running down her muzzle, and she looked distraught.
We stare silently, unsure what to do.
Comfort her or drive her out? She has obviously been through a lot, and it felt wrong to even think of kicking her out in such a condition.
I make the first move, quietly entering and sitting next to her. At first she seems startled, but when I offer her a comforting smile she breaks down, leaning against me.
"He rejected me!" She sobbed.
"Who dear?" I ask softly.
"My mate! My mate rejected me!" Pity goes through me. To reject their mate a wolf must be rabid! You love your mate more than anything, or at least you should.
I look to Crow who was still standing awkwardly outside, motioning him to leave. It would be humiliating for her to finally calm down to find that he had seen her outburst.
I let her cry and whisper comfortingly to her until her sobs quiet, and I realize that she had fallen asleep.
I sit there and wait for Crow. Eventually he comes back with some food for the sleeping wolf, and I set it aside for when she wakes up.
He lays down beside me and I snuggle myself against his side, loving how safe and loved he made me feel.
Then, I remember.
We're not safe. The elder pup warned us of an evil to come.
Crow notices my tenseness and looks at me questioningly.
"What's wrong?" He asks with a frown.
"The elder pups warning. What do you think she meant?"
"I don't know, but worrying about it now won't help" he said trying to give me a piece of mind. "It's not like it will happen soon. We don't have a pack"
I sigh with a frown. "But that's the thing. We don't know that it won't be tomorrow. And what did she mean by pack? Did she mean we were going to join one? Or maybe..."
My eyes widen and my gaze falls upon my stomach.:0 What? This was totally and completely unexpected!(that may or may not be sarcasm)
I'm sorry for sticking you guys with a contest and not a chapter last week but I truly didn't know where to go with this book. Now I've got some more ideas so I'm back on track!
P.S. Happy Birthday, cuz it's someone's somewhere!
