We were on the road to my first major gig. I was restless, nervous, anxious, excited, yet exhausted at the same time. We had already been on the road for an hour and would be stopping for dinner in about four hours and then our hotel. I was already sick of the GPS voice that droned on in the front of the van. We may be a band with a record company, but that doesn’t mean we have money for one of those fancy buses. We were driving in one of the white rolling terds with a trailer on the back of it to hold our stuff. I was on the second row bench with Jay, while Link and Kurt kicked each other in the back, fighting for room. The band manager managed to find some poor sucker to drive us to Rochester.
Jay sat facing me, his back leaning against the arm of the seat, sleeping. His glasses were hanging from his shirt collar and his beanie was tipped a bit lower than usual, trying to block the sun. His one leg was hanging off the seat and I was leaning against the other as it was tucked on the side of me. I had my legs pulled up to my knees and my head resting on them. I shifted the beanie I was wearing, trying to block some of the sun light.
According to the manager, I have to start wearing punkyer clothing. So after dinner last night, I went out and got some new things for the show. I’m a little nervous about wearing it, but I don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb on stage. It was that same feeling as when you’d show up to school with a new haircut, not sure of how people would react to it. I got a pair of black boots that would go over my dark skinny jeans that I already owned. Then I would just wear a deep red tee- shirt with some gothic jewelry. Oh yeah, Link was gonna straighten my hair and I was going to straighten his. Apparently curls aren’t punk, they're just look too innocent.
As we drove farther away from the city, we grew more and more silent. We dozed in and out of sleep for a while too. We’d sit and chat about random things or go over our song list. Something that was really gnawing away at my nerves as we got closer and closer to Rochester was that I would be singing my song. I was excited to get it out in the open and let it soar and find the person that it was meant for or maybe help those who were going through a similar situation. When I woke again from another little day dream, I looked at the clock that told me only 2 hours had passed. Did we stop while I was in a daze or something? No, of course not. I was just dying of boredom. But then God answered my prayers and the driver pulled of the highway exit.
“We’re getting’ low on gas so we’ll stop for a minute. Pee if ya’ need to.” Yes! I didn’t have to pee but I had to stretch and I’m assuming the guys did too because they looked as happy as I felt. In a matter of minutes we pulled into a dumpy little gas station. There was another van like ours and a beat up car in the parking lot. As I leaped out of the van, I could see that the cashier was asleep through the giant window and there were a few other figures moving around in there too. I stretched my arms up and turned around to see that the others were also stretching their cramped limbs.
“Do you guys want anything,” i asked. Jay rubbed his eyes and said
“Yeah I’m gonna get something with a ton of caffeine in it. Kurt you want a coffee?” Kurt ruffled his red hair, trying to wake up. As he leaned against the vans side he said
“You know it.”
Link said “I’ll just have a Coke.” I nodded and walked into the dinky little place with Jay trailing behind.
“I’ll get the Coke and stuff. Are you hungry?”
Jay said “Naw. Do you want tea?” I shook my head and said
“ I’m just gonna get an Arizona.” Jay walked over to the counter top were the Styrofoam cups and hot drinks sat untouched. While I passed through an aisle filled with a million different gums and candies I hummed my song. When I reached the coolers I heard whispering coming from another aisle. As I walked along the wall of coolers, I scanned them for any signs of a Coke or an Arizona. I found the Arizona and the Coke in the same door, grabbed them and let the door slap shut. I looked at the Arizona can, suddenly wondering how much caffeine was in the beverage. I turned around as I scanned the back of it but found myself unable to move. My feet had suddenly been glued to the floor when I heard,
