I lay on the couch with a bag of frozen broccoli resting on the right side of my face.  Jay sat on the floor below me, watching the TV as we waited for everyone’s return.  I didn’t look as bad now since I had all of the blood cleaned off my face, but still, I was a mess.  The pain was setting in and I just wanted to die at this point.  The cool package on my face felt good but it was irritating at the same time.  Part of me wanted to move on to the bag of carrots in the freezer as this one warmed but another part wanted me to chuck this thing across the room and be done with it.

As Jay and I watched TV I started to play around with his hair since he wasn’t wearing a hat for once in his life.  I twirled a piece around my index finger a few times which was oddly entertaining.  His brown hair was surprisingly soft.  Anyway, he didn’t seem to mind but that didn’t stop him from saying

“You having fun over there?”

“Yup,” I said happily.  Jay seemed to have relaxed over the past half hour which made me feel better in a way.  It was easier to let my nerves dissipate if there weren’t other people walking around stringing them back up again.  I have a feeling when the others show up that what’s going to happen.  Then I remembered something.  “Shit,” I muttered.  My finger fell away from Jay’s head and he turned to look at me.

“What’s wrong,”  he asked looking concerned.

“I dropped my ipod out there and forgot to grab it…”

“Well get it tomorrow,” he said.  As if it would still be there.  And if it is there I doubt it it’d be in one piece.  A car would have probably crushed it by now.  “I’ll get you a new one for Christmas if it’s gone.”  I rolled my head over to look at him and said

“Don’t even think about getting me something that expensive.  Its fine, I could afford to get a new one anyway.  It was old and running out of room.”  Just as I finished my sentence the front door flew open.  Frank, Kurt, and Link spilled into the house in silence and wearing frowns on their faces.  Frank didn’t even bother to close the door; he just turned on the living room light and walked over to me.  Frowning down at me he reached for the bag of broccoli and I smacked his hand away.

“Let me see,” he demanded.

“No,” I said feeling oddly intimidated by him.  He must have noticed as I sat up and moved toward the edge of the couch, tucking my legs up to my chest.  My chest was still sore from getting kneed there, but I told no one. Frank sat down on the couch, his leg just grazing my feet.

“Can I see, Eva?  Please.  I won’t get mad.”  That was a lie and we both knew it.  Everyone was watching as I slowly peeled the bag away from my face.  I closed my eyes as I heard a few sharp breaths and some cussing.

“I’m okay.  It doesn’t hurt.”  No one seemed to believe my lie.  I placed the bag back on my face so they wouldn’t see it anymore.  Frank got up and went into the kitchen.  I turned my body so that I was now in the proper sitting position on the couch.  Keeping my legs tucked up to my chest, I rested my forehead on my knees.  Tears of aggravation started to wet my knees and I dropped the bag of broccoli on the floor.  Jay sat next to me on the couch and pulled me into his arms, letting my tears soak his shirt instead. “He’s not mad at you Eva.”

I wish it felt like that.  Wiping the tears from my cheeks I pulled away from Jay, but he kept an arm around me, holding me tight.  I rested my head on his shoulder and asked “Did you find them?”  Kurt walked over, looking pissed as ever.

“No,” he said sourly.  He sat down on the armrest next to me and let out a sigh of disappointment.  Then I noticed his hair.

“What happened to your hair?!”
