The five began to cross the bridge in complete silence, taking care not to misstep. The whole structure swung precariously as they moved, and Niaomi made sure to keep her burning hand held high so that it wouldn’t light up the ropes, which were coated with tar to help secure one’s grip. Ren was right behind her, following at a distance as she puckered her lips at the bridge. Carefully stepping over a gap that spanned three rope lengths, she asked her beau in a low voice, “What color is the bridge now?”

“Still orange.”

“No hints of blue?”

Nicholas frowned. “Why would there be any?”

“Because of the fire and how close it is to the tar,” the blonde replied, nodding toward Niaomi. “Isn’t the entire structure more dangerous than before?”

“Not to mention our weight,” her twin piped up from behind Nick.

Niaomi suddenly paused, and everyone went silent, sure she’d heard them and would go off once more. However, once the girl had squared her shoulders and turned around to face them, Eragon was surprised to see not only remorse in her eyes but the original color returning to them. “Ren, I - ”

The words were cut short when Niaomi gasped, the purple-silver eyes rolling backwards as she fainted. The four watched in horror as the fire flickered out of existence, but not before her hand brushed the rope. The tar immediately caught the flames and flared to life, visible heat traveling down both ends of the bridge until the whole left side was alight.

“Get down!” Renata’s order jolted the rest out of shock and they followed her lead, crouching down as billowing smoke began to rise. Scurrying forward quickly, she reached her fallen friend just as she was beginning to stir. “Nia, are you okay?”

“Never been better,” the violet-eyed girl slurred, groggily coming to and soon realizing the impending disaster. Crawling to her knees, she followed Ren back to the others and asked, “What do we do know?”

“You don’t have a solution?” Rose asked a bit snidely before a coughing fit struck her. Her eyes were back to their clear blue, and the boys’ original colors had returned as well.

Niaomi grimaced. “Obviously my - our - judgment can’t be trusted just because we had that accursed sight. You were right, Ren, and now you have to be right again and find a solution to this mess that we’re in.”

“No pressure,” Nat piped up, managing a grin even as the bridge began listing slightly to one side. “Just remember if we don’t think of something soon, we’re all gonna burn or fall to our deaths.”

Renata didn’t spare a second to glare at him as she stared off into space, thinking hard. “Nia, what elements do you have left?”

“Wind, lightning, and gem."

Ren's eyes focused on the far side of the bridge. In the raging firelight, her irises were like pools of molten silver. "I have an idea, but it's risky. But I have to ask - do you trust me?"
