Chapter Ten: Full Moon
"Is she still asleep?" Charlie asked me. I braced myself on the counter.
"Yeah, she is." Sam replied for me. Aaron sipped coffee from Sam's side.
"Michael, are you sure about this?" Charlie asked. I sighed deeply and looked out the window. Night had fallen an hour ago. Once the moon was high, we would be forced to change.
"Yes, I'm sure." Charlie shook her head slightly. "This is my decision, not anyone else's, and this is the right course of action." I tried to assure her. Sam huffed and crossed his arms over his chest.
"Maybe to you, but not to us. Even Aaron thinks this is wrong. Right Aaron?" Sam asked him. Aaron gave me a torn look. He looked from his boyfriend to me twice before shrugging.
"I think that Michael has a good reason for what he is doing. If he didn't he wouldn't be doing it. I don't think either idea is more right than the other." he said. Sam rolled his eyes.
"Look guys, I don't think it matters anymore."Charlie said. She had a worried expression on her face.
"Why?" Aaron asked.
"Because the moon's high. We need to get ready." she announced. "Aaron, get Sam far away from here. Michael, go to Rebekah. I'll be outside."
Aaron steered Sam out of the kitchen and out of the house. I watched Charlie leave through the back door. I jogged over to my room where Rebekah was sleeping. I pushed the door open silently and tiptoed inside. Before I did anything else, I opened my large window. Rebekah turned in her sleep, so that I could see her face. Even though she had scars, she was still beautiful. They made her even more beautiful. My eyes flicked from her moonlit features to the full moon in the sky. In an instant, I was on all fours. My transformations came easy, but I knew that Rebekah's would not. I had been shifting since I was five, this was her first time. It would be extremely painful, and it would be slower than normal. She wouldn't wake, though. When you shift while asleep, your brain lets you remember it as a nightmare, or sometimes you don't remember it at all.
I stood on all fours by the window, my huge frame blocking the moonlight. Even though she couldn't see it, Rebekah started to change. She cried out in pain as her bones cracked and reshaped. Her spine broke and grew longer to fit how large werewolves are. She screamed, the sound made me whimper. I hated seeing her like this, in pain. Guilt overwhelmed me and I looked away from her as she continued screaming and crying out. Then, she stopped. I turned my head and there she was, a beautiful pure white wolf. The only other colour was black, and it was only on her muzzle where whiskers protruded out and around her eyes. She lurched forward and pushed past me, out the window. I followed her out. I sprinted after her into the forest. Charlie was beside me, as was Aaron. 'Where's Sam?' I asked Aaron.
'Dropped off at the safe house. She doesn't know where it is.' Aaron responded. Rebekah was a blur of white as she changed direction.
'Rebekah,' I tried calling out to her.
'It's no use, Michael. She's not part of our pack. She can't hear you.' Charlie told me. An arrow whizzed past us. I pushed forward, trying to catch up with Rebekah.
'Dammit! Tonight is really not our night, is it?' Aaron surged forward.
'Quit complaining. Go get your girl and take her somewhere other than here. Charlie, go back over by Sam. I'll lead these stupid hunters away, maybe even knock a couple down. Show them what's up.' I shook my huge head, but broke away from Charlie and Aaron.
'Be careful, Aaron.' was the last thing I said to him before we all split off. My huge paws thudded against the moist forest floor as I continued to follow Rebekah. If she would just look at me, she would know that I do not pose a threat to her. 'Rebekah!' I called out to her.
'REBEKAH!' I noticed her fast paced footsteps falter for a second before she sped up again. 'I know you can hear me.' I said. Rebekah shook her white head and sped up even more. I ran up beside her. Trees and bushes flew past us. 'It's me, it's Michael. I'm not going to hurt you.' Rebekah slowed down a little bit and let me get in front of her. I stared into her cold eyes.
'I know you don't have any control, but you need to follow me.' I could tell she was about to take off again, so I stepped toward her. She took a step back. There was a hint of panic in her eyes. She didn't know what to do. 'Rebekah, listen to me. We need to get out of here.' She motioned for me to lead the way with her head. I took off, looking behind me every now and then to make sure she was still following me. I led her off of our property and over a river. She continued following me. We reached a meadow with a stream flowing quietly. Boulders and rocks that had fallen from the mountain we were at the base of littered the meadow. Rebekah trotted towards one of the boulders and pounced on it, smashing it to pieces. Her wolfish grin was adorable as she kept destroying the rocks. She danced playfully around the mess she had made. Her calm expression leaked off her face when she looked at me again. It was replaced by fury. She stepped closer to me slowly as I backed away from her.
I hit a rock with my back. I had nowhere to go. As she got closer, I jumped over her. She spun around and continued toward me. 'Rebekah, I know you're angry, but please don't do this.' she didn't listen. She growled deep in her throat before she lunged. I yelped as her teeth caught on the skin and fur of my neck. I pushed her off of me and moved out of the way before she could attack again. She swiped at my face with her sharp claws. I stepped back just in time for her to miss. 'Rebekah, please.' I pleaded with her. She snapped at me before lunging again. She pushed me onto my back and pinned me there with her weight. She tore at my abdomen with her teeth and claws.
Rebekah was pushed off of me by Aaron, who had slammed into her. Rebekah sped off the way we had came. 'Go home, Michael. I'll make sure she wakes up at the house.' Aaron said. I gave him a nod before limping away.
