Chapter 8

Luke was frowning worriedly as he looked at Kyle. He noticed Lynx was looking at Kyle concernly and slightly curious.

He and Lynx were talking when suddenly Kyle had gone eerily silent and had a faraway look, which confused him greatly. Kyle though sometimes acts like an idiot, an annoyingly meddlesome idiot at that, he was actually very smart. A genius, one could say, he was very resourceful, cunning, sly and observant, but it was quite hidden with his kind and easy going personality. That was one of the reasons Luke can stand him and was his best friend. A wolf in sheep's clothing, he mused, very fitting.

His thoughts were intercepted as Lynx spoke, "Is he alright?"

Luke nodded slowly and replied, "Yes," then glanced at Lynx, "He seems to be lost in thought."

Nodding to himself, Lynx said, "Quite. Does this often happen? He seems to be a little...tense."

"Sometimes, thought he only does this when he is very troubled or very anxious." he then looked at Kyle then sighed, "Anyway I'll snap him out of it for us to continue our conversation."

Luke lifted his uninjured hand to shook Kyle's shoulder. "Hey, Earth to Kyle. You there?"

Kyle blinked snapping out of his trance, then looked around confused and slightly shocked. His gaze landed on Luke, trying to mask his emotions, nodded tersely. "Yeah. Sorry if I worried you both, I was just lost in thought." he said as he grinned sheepishly and continued, "How long was I out?"

Lynx raised his brow. "Just a minute or two. Though I am curious to what you were so deeply thinking about?"

"Yeah, Kyle. Is there something wrong?" Luke asked.

Kyle inwardly tensed, thinking of a plausible excuse since his intuition tells him to keep it to himself. Outwardly, he smiled slightly, showing worry as words left his mouth fluidly. "It's just that I'm worried about my parents...It occurred to me that with all that was happening we forgot about our parents. They'll be worried sick about us since it's already late and we're not yet back."

Luke looked shocked for a moment, he forgot about that with what was happening. He felt guilt, imagining how his father would feel, he shivered after imagining the tongue lashing he'll receive. "Father will be very displeased."

Kyle nodded as well, imagining his parent’s reaction, especially Mom's. "I'm soo dead." he groaned.

Lynx smiled amused seeing their reactions. Then taking pity on them he said. "Later we can contact your parents so that you can confirm to them you are both safe, but now we must finish our conversation."

The boys nodded then Luke asked bluntly, "About my question, what are you protecting?"

"As I said, humans we protect them from creatures."

Luke opened his mouth and was interrupted by Kyle who sighed. "Forget it Luke. It seems he'll never reveal it, considering it is what their group is protecting. You can't expect him to answer us, who he just met."

Luke reluctantly nodded in acceptance as he leaned back at the coach. "Then answer this, can we both go back to our normal lives?"

Lynx looked at them, solemnly and grimly making both of them tense and unease. "I apologize but no. You both will never have the same lives again. For once you have entered this world, may it be accidentally or intentionally, you can never escape. No matter what you do or how you try to run, you can never escape."

Both dramatically paled at that, knowing that the elf was very serious.

Kyle gulped nervously and with slight apprehension. "But you said there was a...barrier of sort to separate both this...magical world and our world. So why can't we return to our normal lives?"
