I'm Ok With Waiting

Hakeem

I knew she was carrying something before she said a word.

Kaedi had that quiet look—like she was present but somewhere else at the same time. Not distant. Just thoughtful. The kind of thoughtful that comes from weighing something that matters.

That's why I didn't rush her.

I parked like I always did, a little off to the side, and walked up easy. No calling out her name. Not announcing myself.

When she looked up and saw me, she smiled—but it wasn't the loud kind.

It was real.

"You okay?" I asked, because that's always the right place to start.

When she told me she was still sorting through feelings—about someone from her past—I didn't feel surprised.

I felt... informed.

That's the difference.

A lot of dudes hear that and immediately think it's about competition. About losing. About pride.

But I wasn't here to win anything.

I was here to be honest.

"I appreciate you telling me," I said, and I meant it.

Because clarity—even when it's uncomfortable—is still respect.

She looked at me like she expected more. Like she expected disappointment or frustration.

I didn't give her that.

"I like you," I told her. "But I'm not in a rush. And I'm not trying to be anybody's replacement."

That was the truth.

I watched her shoulders drop just a little after that.

Like she'd been bracing herself and finally realized she didn't have to.

We sat there in the quiet, side by side but not touching. And that felt right too.

Some connections don't need to be loud to be solid.

When I stood to leave, I didn't lean in. Didn't try to steal a moment that wasn't offered.

"I'll check in later," I said. "If that's cool."

She smiled. "It is."

Walking back to my car, I felt calm.

Not because I knew how this would end—but because I knew how I showed up.

If she chose me, I wanted it to be because she felt safe, clear, and sure.

And if she didn't?

I'd still know I did this right.

Sometimes the strongest move isn't stepping forward.

It's knowing when to stand still—and let someone meet you where you are.

And for now?

That was enough.
