It felt strange—in the best way.
Everybody was back on the block like time had looped around just to test us. Same porches. Same music drifting from somewhere down the street. Same summer air clinging to skin.
But none of us were the same people anymore.
Kaedi showed up with Hakeem beside her—not clinging, not distant. Just aligned. Stacey clocked it immediately, eyebrows lifting with a quiet okay then. Leah smiled like she already knew the ending to a story she'd prayed through.
Dino was already there, talking to Shazam and G.I., laughing easy. Not forced. Not loud. When he saw Kaedi, he paused—just a second—then nodded.
Respect.
That alone said everything.
"Look at us," Stacey said, arms folded as she leaned against the fence. "All grown and emotionally responsible. Who would've thought?"
Shazam laughed. "Speak for yourself."
Food got passed around. Stories got traded—tour mishaps, Europe nonsense, Summerfest chaos. The night moved naturally, no awkward gaps, no unfinished sentences hanging in the air.
At one point, Dino ended up next to Kaedi by the cooler.
"You good?" he asked casually.
"I am," she said honestly.
He nodded. "You look it."
No tension. No what-ifs. Just acknowledgment.
Across the yard, Hakeem watched—not possessive, not nervous. Just present. Dino noticed, too. That didn't sting the way it once would've.
Later, as the music slowed and people started drifting home, the six of them stood together like old times.
"Crazy how life works," Leah said softly. "We all wanted something so bad back then."
"And now?" G.I. asked.
Stacey smiled. "Now we know better."
Kaedi glanced around at them—her people, her history, her present—and felt something settle deep in her chest.
This wasn't closure.
It was evolution.
Dino clapped his hands together. "Same crew," he said. "Different chapters."
"Exactly," Hakeem added.
No one argued.
As the group broke apart, Kaedi slipped her hand into Hakeem's. He squeezed once—steady, grounding.
Behind them, Dino watched for a moment longer before turning away, already stepping into whatever came next for him.
No bitterness.
No regret.
No rewrites.
Just growth standing in the same place it all started—
and finally fitting there differently.
