Kaedi
"What am I wearing to this party?" I muttered, throwing clothes out of my closet.
I grabbed my white high-waisted jeans and pulled them on.
"What's next? What's next? I need a cute top," I said, pacing around and talking to myself. I opened my top drawer, pulled out my peach crop top, and slipped it on.
I checked myself out in the bathroom mirror and smiled.
Then my face dropped.
"I still gotta do my hair and makeup. Ugh! So much work!" I yelled.
"KAE!" Brianna screamed from my room.
"BATHROOM, BRI!" I yelled back, stepping out.
She met me by my bed, hands on her hips. "Why you dressed up? Where you going?"
I rolled my eyes. "Why you all in my business?
"I just wanna know," she said. "I'm spending the night at Cindy's. Shawn going to the club with Derrick. You gonna be here by yourself."
"Nah. I'm going to Dwayne's party with Leah and Stacey," I said, smiling sweetly. "But I need a favor."
"I hate when you do that creepy smile," she said, backing up.
"I need you to do my makeup" I said. "I'll give you twenty Benjamins."
"Deal!" she yelled, running to my dresser. "Sit!"
I plopped onto the bed while she got to work.
An hour later, she finished—and I was impressed.
"Good job, Bri," I said, checking myself out.
"You're welcome! Scary turned into Mary," she laughed. "What you doing with your hair?"
"Curling it the lazy way."
"Wet it and brush it out," she said, laughing.
"You sho' nuff right."
I disappeared into the bathroom, grabbed my brush and conditioner, soaked my hair, and worked it through. After rinsing and towel-drying, I brushed it out, added product, and let the curls do their thing.
Back in my room, I touched up my makeup and grabbed the phone.
Phone Call
Me: "You almost done?"
Stacey: "Yeah girl, just finishing my makeup."
Me: "You call Leah yet? You know she move slow as hell."
Stacey: "She already on her way."
Me: "Stop playin'. The world must be ending."
Stacey: (laughing) "She just wanna get wasted and forget about Darryl."
Me: "Damn. Hopefully she find her a cute dude tonight. Hell—hopefully we all do. Keven been playing with me and I'm done waiting."
Stacey: "Girl, SAME. If I find me a new man, it's bye-bye Shazam."
Me: "Period. I'll be on the porch."
Stacey: "See you."
I hung up, grabbed my Jordans, slipped on my socks, added deodorant and perfume, and shoved some cash into my pocket.
"Eight forty-five," I muttered. "Perfect."
On my way downstairs, Shawn nearly knocked me over.
"Damn, Shawn! I know I'm small, but I ain't that small."
He laughed.
"Where you going?" he asked.
Just to mess with him, I smiled. "Meeting Derrick."
I felt him right behind me.
"You about to do what?!"
I stepped forward on purpose.
A car horn blew. I reached for the door, and Shawn slammed it shut.
Brianna came halfway down the stairs. "She going out with Leah and Stacey. You know damn well she not meeting Derrick. Chill."
I kissed Shawn's cheek. "Love you, overprotective ass."
Then I was out the door.
"HEY Y'ALL!" I yelled, hugging my girls. "Let's get this party started!"
"You look bangin'!" Leah said.
"Y'all do too," I replied as we headed off.
