Slamming my foot onto the accelerator, I speed down the empty country lane, the sound of the tires burning rings in my ears. I spin around the corner, swerving slightly and i force on the brakes, making the car shake to a sudden stop. I sigh loudly, running my shaking hands over my face.
"Miss Stark, its time to take another injection." Jarvis announces.
On the desk of the car, a compartment is revealed and a needle is pushed up into my view. I take it, placing the metal into the skin of my arm and releasing the cool liquid. I then lay it back in the compartment and Jarvis pulls it down.
"Thanks Jarvis, I don't know what i'd do without you." I whisper, clicking my hands in my lap.
Since I nearly died half a year ago because my mutation was taking over my body, I now have to inject myself everyday with a drug my dad created that has killed most of my mutation. It's a pain but it keeps me alive.
I start the engine again and drive steadily down the country road, then onto the main.
Reaching SHIELD, no one is around after i sent them all home. I scan my card and get the elevator. I step off on my level and walk to my office.
Its simple, with white walls and a few framed photos of the Avengers. In the middle is a desk with three blue computer screens and there are four metal filing cabinets.
Sitting on my office chair, i spin around and glance around the room.
"You have a video email from Hakweye." Jarvis announces.
"Play on the wall."
The projection shows Captain standing against the wall, dressed in his blue suit with the star and holding his loved shield. Im stood on the left, wearing jeans and a top, smiling at Captain.
"You sure about this?" I question.
"Um...yes." He admits, biting his lip.
"I haven't trained a lot." I admit.
"That's okay, i trust you not to kill me." He jokes.
I choke on a sob as i continue to watch.
"Drop your shield, then." I order and he drops it with a thud onto the tiled floor.
I blink, my eyes turning pure blue and a knife lifts next to my right ear. I spin, launching the knife and it just misses Captain's left shoulder and he sighs in relief.
"You are terrified." I tease, unable to control my laughter.
"No, I am brave to let you do that. You put a cut in my suit." He complains, pulling the knife out and showing me.
"Oh, relax. You can stitch, that's what they taught you in 1940, wasn't it?" I joke, walking to the door.
I glance back, seeing Captain staring at the floor and not laughing at my joke.
"Oh, shoot. Im sorry, Cap. I was just messing with you. Sorry." I mumble, walking back to him.
I wrap my arms around his back and he hugs me too, his hands on my waist.
"Stop. Turn it off, Jarvis." I order, wiping the streaming tears off my face.
I turn back to face the computers, catching a glimpse of a shoe. My eyes follow the feet up to see Jake, my assistant, stood by the door, holding three cardboard boxes. He strides up to my desk.
"The board told me to give you these." He announces, showing me a small silver key with a red keyring on it with the number 04.
Dread fills me, I lower my head. Number 04 is Captain's locker.
