CHAPTER 9 - A Happy Thanksgiving?

Trip and his crew were flying from Hong Kong to New York and mid flight Trip and Martin talk, "So are you goin home to the folks for thanksgiving?" Martin asked as he drank water. "Yeah, I promised them I'd go back for thanksgiving." Trip replied and clicked something.

"Are you gonna be in the city or join your grandparents in Newport?" Martin asked. "We're probably gonna go to Newport because grandpa can't drive anymore because of his condition." Trip replied.

"What about you? Are you gonna spend it with Jess or the family?" Trip asked. "Jess still isn't talking to me." Martin sighed. "I'm trying to really clean up my act, Trip." He said. "I know that, Martin but you have to try a little more." Trip replied. "I am trying. Right now, she just needs some time away from me." Martin replied. Trip nodded, "I understand." He said. "Thanks." Martin replied.

After a couple of hours while Martin chose to rest first, Trip was staring blankly into the sky. It was one of those flights that he dreaded so much because they came from across the world and still had a long way to go to New York.

As he stared blankly into the sky, he thought of how empty it was and how it reflected him in some way. And one thing he noticed was how he couldn't feel anything. He was numb.

Eventually he snapped out of deep thinking and was reminded of that time, he and Megan had a huge fight.

"Megan how many times do I have to tell you, I don't wanna go to your parents for Thanksgiving this year. We went to theirs last year. Didn't you say that we go to my grandparents' Thanksgiving dinner party instead for this year?!" Trip exclaimed while Megan was putting on clothes. "I'm sorry but I couldn't say no! My mom was making me guilty. I already missed her birthday because of Cannes okay, I wanna make it up to her." She replied.

Trip rolled his eyes, "We can spend Christmas at your grandparents this year instead of mine." She suggested. "That's not really such a good solution. We can't just not show up, Thanksgiving dinner parties that my grandparents throw are very important and we haven't attended for two years straight now." He replied. "Trip it's fine, your grandparents love me." She joked and tried to lighten up the situation.

Trip was getting annoyed, "That's not really fair, Megan." He said in a disappointing tone. "Put yourself in their shoes. When I got off the phone with them, they were so excited that we were coming and to tell them that we're not going is kind of disrespectful." He said now raising his voice.

Megan was now finished dressing up and putting on make up, "Why are you getting mad?! It's just a party." She retorted. "It's a big deal to me, it's a big deal to my grandparents and my family. Why can't you see that? I've sacrificed most of my holidays for you but you won't sacrifice this one holiday for me." He voiced out now he was getting riled up.

"Fine then! It's just a stupid holiday!" Megan raised her voice at Trip. "It's not just a stupid holiday." He retorted. "Do you know the real story behind Thanksgiving?!" She hissed. Trip didn't answer, "The Native Americans fucking gave the Brits food because it was fucking cold and what do they do in return? They kill them all like they massacred every single one of them." Megan said with a burning passion.

Trip snapped out of it and then returned to monitoring the plane. As he looked at the controls, he noticed that the weather was changing badly.

"Yo, Mart wake up!" Trip said and woke Martin up. "What the heck?" Martin said in surprise. "Is that a storm?!" Martin rubbed his eyes and saw a huge nimbus cloud.

Trip then announced, "Cabin crew, please be seated." Then Phoebe announced, "Ladies and gentleman, the captain has turned on the seatbelt sign. We are now crossing a zone of turbulence. So please return to your seats and make sure your seat belts are fastened. Thank you."
