CHAPTER 16 - Telling The World
Trip and Amelia have been dating for a while now like two months to be exact, but no one knows that they are except for Martin and Chase. At work, they try to keep their hands off of each other and keep it casual. They haven't told anyone yet because they're slowly taking their time to figure things out.
Until, "You should go to my mother's thing tonight." He said as he stood beside her while she prepares the snacks to distribute. "What do you mean?" She asked. "My parents are raising money for clean water at the Met Museum tonight." He said. "Since we'll be in New York 'til tomorrow I figured, why not have our date at the charity event." He added. Amelia was hesitant, "You want me to meet your family?" She asked.
Then Elaine walks in, "Guys, cranky babies annoy the hell out of me. Is there like a toy or a giveaway we can give to the little monster?" She asked. Amelia checks the storage, "Trip, what're you doing back here?" Elaine asked. "Bathroom." He said nervously. "You know there's one just outside the cockpit right?" Elaine said. Trip mustered up a pale smile, "Yes I am aware of that but it was occupied." He replied then Amelia gives Elaine a stuffed toy in a shape of a plane. "Mhmmm okay. Thanks!" Elaine said and then leaves.
"So what do you say?" Trip asked. Amelia finishes preparing the food. "Can we talk about this later?" Amelia asked and Trip nods, "Yeah sure." He said and then went back to the cockpit.
"So is she gonna go?" Martin asked as Trip sat in his seat. "I don't know." Trip replied. "What did she say?" Martin asked. "She said she wants to talk about it later." Trip replied. "I think she's just nervous to meet your family." Martin said. "Or just the fact that dating you would involve telling the world as well." He added.
Trip looked down and lowered his head, "I haven't told her about all that yet." He said with a heavy sigh. "What?! I think you should tell her." Martin replied. "Because I don't think she really knows the implications of dating you, Trip." He added. "She has no clue." Trip replied. "Then you better tell her as soon as possible, because she might not like being in the spotlight. And not just that, I don't think she'll like our life in general." Martin replied.
Trip knew that his life was different from others. He grew up in the public eye and that was something he never really had a choice to begin with.
He sighed, "What should I say?" He asked Martin. "Maybe start with, 'if you date me, you'll be dating the whole world'." Martin replied. Trip rolled his eyes and shook his head, "I'm serious Mart." He said. "What would Megan do? I was just thinking about how she would've handled this kind of situation?" Martin replied.
Trip was kinda caught off guard, "She was rather good with the press." He said. "She was the press." Martin replied. Trip smiled, "Ironic isn't it?" He said. "How?" Martin asked. "She was just like us but chose to be the person behind the cameras." Trip replied and Martin nods in agreement. "But you gotta admit, the cameras still loved her. She was a great girl." Martin said. "She was something." Trip said and they both smiled at each other.
Then they were silent for a while until, "Do you still think about her?" He asked. "Who?" Trip asked. "Megan." Martin replied. Trip was suddenly at a loss for words then collected himself, "Uhm, sometimes. I think about her sometimes." He said softly. He clears his throat, "Why do you ask?" He asked. "Nothing." Martin replied. "Well I miss her sometimes. With her it was different y'know. She was such a big part of who I was..." Trip said and they were back to being silent again.
Then suddenly something dawned on Trip, "Do you think it's too early for me to introduce her to my family?" Trip asked going back to the Amelia topic. "Well, I guess... I mean... I don't really know..." Martin replied. "What do you think?" He asked. "What do you think?" Trip threw the question right back. "I don't know, man. I think if you're ready then maybe you can. Are you ready though?" He asked. "Ready for what?" Trip asked. "Ready to introduce her to your family... To the world... ready to start all over again..." Martin replied. "Oh." Trip said and then became silent.
