Lauren: I'm so excited we're finally meeting each other!!

Camila: omg same man

Camila: two weeks too long later

Lauren: I knoww 😌😌

Camila hadn't necessarily been avoiding meeting Lauren. It's more that she didn't really feel- okay, so yeah she was avoiding meeting Lauren. Not because she didn't want to! She was nervous out of her mind. Lauren seemed nice enough. But Camila was a grade A loser. Sure she could be funny and charming through messages, but what if she stuttered a lot of said something stupid in real life?

She couldn't just press the back space button and start over.

Lauren: what class are you in?

Camila: world history

Camila: but I'm looking for a vending machine rn

So, she started taking extra shifts tutoring and helping around the day care. It was an excuse that Lauren didn't question. But, if she were being honest, Camila was growing anxious. She wanted to know what Lauren was like in person. Did she have an intimidating vibe? God, Camila hoped not. She was already terrified of messing up in front of the other girl, imagine if Lauren was unintentionally intimidating. That would screw things up even more.

Camila shook her head to rid herself of bad thoughts. She focused once more on the hallway in front of her as she made her way to the vending machine, instead of thinking of potential outcomes when she finally met Lauren that day.

It was surreal to her, honestly. She'd had tons of internet friends before, some even planned to meet up with her. But this was the first time it would actually happen.

Lauren: omg yumm

Lauren: I left my wallet at home :(

Before she could type a response, she crashed into another body as she turned the corner. Books collided with the ground, and along went Camila's phone and wallet.

"Fuck." The other person groaned. They, no, she, bent down and began picking things up.

"Sorry, I wasn't looking." Both girls laughed at the same time. The other girl picked up Camila's phone to hand it to her, but her eyes stayed on the screen for a moment too long.

"Camila?"

"Holy crap, Lauren?"

"Wow. We go to school together for two years and this is how we meet for the first time." Lauren giggled, standing up fully. She faltered for a moment.

Did she hug Camila? Was that weird?

She couldn't worry too much longer because Camila seemed to sense her inner conflict and pulled her in for a quick hug.

"You're shorter than me." Lauren beamed. She mentally slapped herself. Seriously, Jauregui? That's the best you could come up with?

Camila still blushed and giggled, though.

"Only by like, two inches maybe."

"I always thought you'd be taller than me for some reason. Maybe it's because your ego seemed to take up the entire room when we texted." Lauren winked.

"Oh please, that's you, my friend." And just like that, the tension was gone. They felt like they'd known each other for years, rather than only physically meeting a few moments ago. "Your voice is cool." Camila grinned dopily.

"Worth the wait?"

"Definitely. Way better than if I had to hear it through crappy phone service." She assured.

"Well I'm glad. Oh! Here." Lauren handed the daisy-covered wallet back to Camila and nodded.

"Want some chips?" Camila asked, walking up to the vending machine and punching in a code. A bag of Doritos dropped down after she slid a few coins in the slot.

"Sure." Lauren shrugged. They sat down on a little bench and Camila knew Mr. Goodall would chastise her for taking so long in the hall.

For some reason, though, she couldn't care less.
