It had been exactly a month since Lauren and Camila started talking. The two girls had grown exponentially closer over the time frame. They even hung at with each other's friends at lunch more often than not. It was a huge relief when they all hit it off immediately.
They even found out about Ally, Dinah, and Normani hanging out without the two other girls. It seemed to work out perfectly. Like, their group was meant to happen and Lauren messaging Camila was just the catalyst for it all. Throughout the month, they became inseparable.
Camila and Lauren had just gotten back from their short shopping trip after school. Lauren was planning on sleeping over, saying she wanted to be there at midnight on Camila's 16th birthday. She was draped across Camila's couch in the her living room, and she was occupied with adjusting the new nose ring she'd put in. Instead of the regular hoop, she got an L-shaped stud and felt rather insecure that it would fall out.
Camila wander around the room, aimlessly picking things up and cleaning as she her mom had texted her to. There was music playing from the outdated stereo that her father insisted they keep. That's when Camila noticed it.
The whoopee cushion Sofi had misplaced a mere two days ago.
She grinned manically and put her foot under the couch subtly. She stomped on the pink rubber and an obnoxious farting noise came out. Lauren looked at her in shock before bursting into laughter.
"Did you just-" she cut herself off, wheezing a breath of air. "Did you just.. fart?" She was practically choking on her own laughter and it caused Camila to fall to her knees and begin to laugh. She nodded, still going along with it. She found it funny that Lauren believed the unrealistic fart came from her.
Lauren laughed even harder at this. And then Camila threw the farting object at her friend and it hit the green eyed girl smack in the face. Lauren's eyes widened as she fell off the couch and onto her hands and knees. She only curled into herself and laughed harder, making Camila cry.
"Wait!" Lauren shouted, choppy because of laughter. "Wait my nose ring! It fell out!" She giggled. When she looked up, Camila saw that Lauren had tears streaming down her face. It only made her laugh harder and she thought she may have resembled an asthmatic walrus with her silent gasps for air. "Camz I'm serious." Lauren whined, but the laughter in her voice made her sound anything but.
Camila weakly made her way across the room and helped Lauren find the piece of silver. "A ha!" Lauren cheered when she found it. Camila looked up at her but was met with a face full of pink rubber. "Pay back, Camzi." Lauren grinned sweetly, while Camila held a hand up to where the whoopee cushion made contact with her nose. Lauren's face was stained with tears of laughter.
Both girls collapsed on the floor, finally over their laughing fit. They stared up at the ceiling in silence, besides their heavy panting. When they finally managed to calm down, the front door opened and in came a happy Sofi. She pranced over to the pair on the floor with Sinu trailing behind her, carrying some grocery bags.
"Hey!" Sofi cheered. "My whoopee cushion!" And that threw the girls back into their seemingly infinite fits of laughter. "What?" Sofi frowned. She wanted to know what was so funny. What was the point in seeing people laugh if you couldn't laugh with them?
"Nothing." Camila giggled. Her stomach ached as she sat up finally.
"Karla," Sinu said after putting the bags in the kitchen, an amused smile on her lips. "What happened to cleaning? We're having people over for your birthday tomorrow and you haven't done anything."
"You're doing something for your birthday?" Lauren asked.
"Oh yeah I forgot to tell you. You're coming over after school again." Camila chuckled.
"What if I have plans?" Lauren asked, feigning offence.
"You don't."
"How do you know?"
"I asked you like, two days ago."
"I could've made plans in those two days."
"Yesterday I asked Normani if she had plans for tomorrow. "
"I have more friends than Normani."
"None of which you hang out with outside of school."
"Not true." Lauren scoffed. "I hang out with Lucy and Vero. And Alexa."
"Well, do you have plans?"
"No"
"Exactly."
Lauren tried to be annoyed by Camila's smug expression, but she only found it endearing.
"Oh man." They heard Sofi whine from the kitchen. "Mami, you forgot the stuff for dinner tonight."
"It's fine. We can just order pizza or something, Mija." Sinu told her younger daughter.
"But I was looking forward to having arroz con pollo." Sofi pouted.
"Camila and I can go to the store to buy whatever you need. Right, Camz?" Lauren offered. Camila just shrugged.
"Are you sure?" Sinu asked hesitantly.
"I'm sure. It's not a big deal. I wanted to buy some popcorn or something anyway."
"Thank you, Lauren." And with that, a list of needed ingredients was handed to her and Lauren and Camila were on their way.
"You didn't have to do this, ya know." Camila said when they entered the grocery store. "Sofi can live without arroz con pollo for a bit."
"It's fine, I promise."
Lauren decided she liked shopping with Camila. Sure they've been to a grocery store together before. But that was usually for junk food raids. She felt like the teenager she was. But now she was shopping for actual groceries. She saw Camila actually checking the prices instead of picking up whatever she deemed fit.
It felt almost domestic and Lauren wasn't sure what that meant, but she knew she liked it.
