Lacey's POV

Chapter 9: I Can't Let Go

I lay in bed, unmoving, in a haze of sorts. I gaze out my window, my own thoughts tearing me apart. It's been two months since Klaus just... Left. Was everything all just one big lie to him? Was I a lie? All I know is that as I sit alone, I've never felt more worthless. The nightmares never stop, if anything they've gotten worse. But that really isn't a surprise. I sigh. There's really no point in mourning over someone who isn't even dead. But it's worse than that.He left me of his own accord.

At least death would've been more noble.

Immediately I feel terrible just thinking that. How can I wish that of a person? Who have I become? Of couse I don't want Klaus dead. I just don't want to feel like I do anymore. I'm tired of feeling empty. I'm sick of being alone.

I did my usual morning routine - Shower and whatnot, and head to the kitchen. I hear voices in the living room, shouting at each other. On instinct, I listen in.

"Memphis."

"Another dead end, you mean?"

"You don't know that."

"You're right, Elena. After two months this could be the clue that Stefan is alive and well and living in Graceland!"

Elena scowls, turning her back to Damon. "Fine. I'll go by myself." He's in front of her in an instant. "Sure you are. And let Klaus know that you're tracking him? He'd kill you in a second. He thinks you're dead. Let's keep it that way."

"It's a new lead, Damon. We haven't had one in a while." She argues. "Okay. I'll check it out, if I find anything I'll call you." He smirks. "But - " He walks away from her, as a way to make his word final, and walks back to his room.

"Do you not know me well enough to know I can hear you? I can see you. I'm a vampire, and I'm not in a good mood. Cut to the chase." He doesn't look towards me, but it's pretty clear who he's talking to. I scowl, coming out of my hiding place and crossing my arms. "I'm going with you." Damon rolls his eyes.

"No you're not. You are currently breathing, and a little trip to find my psycho brother and a crazier serial killer will not end well for you. Stefan wouldn't want you dead, and I don't want to be responsible for it." My blood starts to boil, my face going red with anger. "To hell with what Stefan wants! This is about what I want!"

"You're not going, Lacey." He looks in my eyes, searching for an explanation, one I don't plan on giving. "It's a good thing I didn't ask your permission."

Damon's POV

My phone buzzes. I immediately decline it.

"Too quiet." I observe aloud, staring at the house in Memphis. With Ric as my accomplice, we searching for Stefan.

We both walk up to the house, the only sounds I can make out are the wind against the trees, Ric's heavy breathing, and the creak of the house and floorboards as I open the door. The first thing I see is a couch, and a tv, but that isn't all. "Oh yeah." I say. There's blood covering the walls, doors, and windows. Two girls, sprayed in blood sit on the couch. It's like a bad horror movie.

Alaric grimaces. "Vampire for sure." He says, eyeing the bodies. "Stefan for sure." I correct. "How do you know?"

"It's his signature. There's a reason they call him the ripper. He feeds so hard he blacks out, rips them apart. When he's done, he feels remorse. It's the damnedest thing." I brushed the blonde's leg with my foot and her head fell off. "Puts the bodies back together."

"Back together?" I glanced back at the head. "Definitely Stefan."

I grab a bottle of gasoline, and begin to pour it on the bodies. "What are you doing?" Alaric shouts. "Covering their tracks. They have no interest of staying in the dark, but I do." I light a match, and the fire consumes the corpses. And then, we make a very quick dramatic exit.

+ + + + +

Something simple and fun turns into a party with a very unhappy birthday girl, and a very pissed off adopted-sister.  A feud begins when Lacey and Elena find my little 'closet' with all my leads on Stefan. That didn't really end well for anyone. Elena storms off to sulk and Lacey just looks at me with a new-found hurt in her eyes. A hurt I'm not used to seeing.

"I miss him too, okay? But why are you so upset about this?" I pry. She sighs, covering her face with her hands in exasperation. "You just don't get it, Damon! You'll never understand!"

"Then help me to!" I shout. "From the beginning, you shut me out! Just let me in, Lacey! Let me be here for you!"

"I don't know what to do anymore. Everything's just so complicated..." She trails off, deep in thought. Then looks me straight in the eye, as if staring deep into my soul. It's like her cocoa irises are looking for a reason to trust me.

"I love him, Damon." She whispers.

"I love him too, he's my brother."

She lets out a sigh, shaking her head and squeezing her eyes tightly shut. "No. Not Stefan. I'm not talking about Stefan."

"Klaus." I whisper almost as a question, searching for confirmation. She nods, tears in her eyes. " I didn't mean to. The timing's terrible. After everything he did to you guys... Damon, I swear I didn't know. I just want him back. I have to find him."

"Lacey, listen to me." I plead. "Stop looking for him, stop waiting for him to come home, just stop." I wiped one of her tears away with my cheek. "Look at me, baby. He doesn't deserve you. He doesn't deseve your tears, okay? Please. Please, don't do this to me. If you go after him, you'll get yourself killed. You're my little sister, Lace. Don't go. Forget about him." I pull her in for a hug.

She lets out a sob, her head in my chest. "I can't forget." She cries, her voice trembling. "I can't, I can't." I kiss her hair. "Listen, you're all I've got. I don't care what the damn birth certificates say, you're my sister. Family sticks together, right? We're family, Lacey. I can't lose you too. And if you go out there, looking for someone who doesn't care about you..."

"I know I don't always show it, but I don't know what I would do if something happened to you. I can't lose you, Lacey Marie. Please don't go."
