Chapter 8

I don’t even know why I did it. When I woke up the next morning, I opened my laptop and googled Kyler’s name. Sure enough, a bunch of news articles popped up, dating back to yesterday afternoon. I opened the first link and read what they had to say.
CONFIRMED, LADIES AND GENTLEMAN – THE TRUTH FROM THE MAN HIMSELF
We have received an exclusive from Kyler Thorne himself concerning the recent rumours. He has given us a statement.
“To the media and the members of the public, I’m afraid my girlfriend has asked me to only say a few words. Firstly, she has insisted for me to clearly deny the fact that she is pregnant. I had actually not wanted to reveal why we were at the hospital in the first place, but she was firm and told me to come out in the open. She had injured her leg – a piece of glass had cut into it quite deeply – so I had bought her to the hospital. I hope this is enough to deny all pregnancy rumours flying around. But she has allowed me to come clean with our relationship. We met a few days ago, when she first flew into London. She is indeed my girlfriend but it’s clearly the beginning and we had not wanted to say anything. Thank you for understanding.”
As we said before, this is an exclusive statement from Kyler Thorne himself. Stay tuned!
I rolled over on my bed and replayed his statement in my mind. My mind was doing mental flips on me so I decided to wheel my books suitcase I had and headed off to one of my special places.

I stopped outside of a rundown two storey building. I would have been quite triumphant of my amazing navigation skills especially since I arrived here on public transport if not for the horror of seeing such a deteriorating place. I walked cautiously up the pathway to the front door, gripping the suitcase handle and rang the door bell. An elderly woman answered the door and gave me warm smile.
“Hello miss. What may we do for you?” She rested her hand on a walking stick and craned her head up at me.
“Hi. Is this the local orphanage in the area?” I eyed the building in alarm.
“It is.” A thin raspy voice spoke. She hobbled her way over to my spot outside. “I have begged the people here to do something about this but my petition always falls through.” She sighed.
“That’s horrible to hear.” I made a mental note to see what I could do. “Anyway, I came to visit. I’m vacationing in London and I always volunteer at my local orphanage back in Sydney.” I held up a bag of books. “I’m donating some old stuff of mine to the kids.”
“Thank you.” She thanked me sincerely and moved out of the way. “Come in and meet everyone. You can give them the books yourself.”
“My name is Emma.” The elderly lady hobbled in front of me. “What’s your name?” She turned her head slightly and made eye contact with me.
“Serenity. I’m Serenity.” I smiled while wheeling in my suitcase. “People call me Reni.”
“Well, Reni.” Her hand trembled as she opened the door. “These are all the kids here.”
I pulled up to a stop beside her and watched as a bunch of children came running to her. “Grandma Emma! Look! George made amazing Lego building.” I laughed inwardly at her incorrect English. “Come!” A bunch of girls dragged her towards this boy and his building.
I watched as they all smiled happily at her and it all looked like one big family. That’s what I loved about orphanages. No matter how dire the situation, at the end of the day they all knew love, faith and friendship. Even though these children were either abandoned or their parents died. I didn’t have to be parentless or abandoned to understand the depth of feeling there. That’s why I love volunteering here. I feel special just being part of something special.
