Chapter 14
“I’m Kyler’s P.A.” He answered. He placed his palm beside his mouth and whispered quietly, “and best friend!”
“If you knew him, you should have told me!” I yelled at him, feeling a little hurt that he toyed with me.
“Aww. C’mon, it was funny. If you were me, you would have found it funny as well.” I felt a bit of hurt melt away, finding his explanation reasonable. If I was him, I would have done the same – for the element of surprise.
“Dev, if you met my girlfriend on the plane, you should have contacted me!”
“So you could buy her a bouquet of roses? No man.” He stopped then added, “And you know phones have to be off during the flight, stupid.” He playfully stretched out the stupid and sounded so much like a child.
Kyler breathed in and out before gesturing towards the limo outside. “Let’s go.” He wrapped his arm around my waist and led me outside. Devon followed us, keeping a safe distance so he wouldn’t be snapped in the photos that everyone was taking. Like, no. When you hold you phone up towards me and you forget to turn your flash off, I do not know you’re snapping a photo of us. It’s not even discreet.
Once we were in the safety and confidence of the limo, Kyler released his anger.
“You can’t just take off without telling me specifically. When you said you were leaving, I thought you were referring to leaving the room. That’s pathetic. You don’t know how worried I was. I mean, you were push onto me then hit on your head. You know someone’s after me and they’re using you and you still choose to disappear without a clear notice. Can you believe I actually hired a search team for you?” He rambled on with anger and I flinched. Okay, true that I didn’t think of the hitting on the head thing and all but a search team? Oops.
“Well, in my defence, you were ignoring me that day and I had to leave that night because I had things to take care of.”
“Did you ever study law? That’s such a weak defence.” Kyler snapped back.
“No! I’m in the fashion industry, why would I have studied law?” I retorted. “Plus, you’re a businessman, what would you know about the law?”
“I have a degree in law.” He responded smoothly, sounding victorious. I felt shock course through my body.
“You do?”
“Yeah. LLM. Masters of Law.” He shrugged nonchalantly.
“Are you serious? Why did you do law if business is what you are going to end up walking the path of?”
“It wasn’t hard. Uni was like high school. Everything was easy. Law was easy. I was bought up around it.”
“Huh? But wouldn’t your parents have taken a degree in business?” I glanced at him confused. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Devon shake his head and put his fingers to his lips.
“I have a business degree too.” He dodged the question and answered with something totally off.
“Oh.” I kept silent as the awkwardness filled out the carriage.
“What cropped up?” Kyler finally spoke as we stopped at a traffic light.
I hesitated before answering truthfully. “An important client came up and she refused to work co-operatively with my partner.”
“Partner?” I saw a dangerous look pass through his eyes. I almost face-palmed myself then and there. Partner is often used to refer to a long term boyfriend.
