Chapter 35
It was like being in court. Kyler was leaning against the wall, looking weary and exhausted. Del was sitting down on the far side of the table, my mum in the middle and Jay on the other side. I glanced cautiously at them from the opposite side of the table.
“Jay, why are you here in New York?” I dawdled as they all gave me pointed glares.
“If you got shot and miscarried why on earth won’t we be here?” My mum answered, clucking her tongue gently.
“It’s just that you didn’t come see me in hospital so…” I trailed off, allowing them to draw their own conclusions.
“Kyler was so worried and exhausted he forgot to call us.” My mum explained and I sighed.
“I’m feeling fine now.” I lied smoothly. “Jay, you should go back. I’ll come as soon as I can. Del, you should take Mum home.” I attempted to get up but he stopped me.
“Reni, I’ve known you for twenty two years. You’re lying.” Del spoke up as soon as I stood. I turned my head back into his direction, glaring as my eyes filled with tears.
“Okay. I’m not alright. I feel as if part of me is gone. I don’t feel the life I used to. I miscarried and lost my baby and I’m still not alright. Are you happy now?” I waved my hands wildly in anguish.
“Serenity.” My mum whispered in a cajoling voice.
“Just don’t. It makes me feel worse. I’m sorry. I’m really not okay. I’m sure Kyler can entertain you for however long you want to stay.” I headed out of the room and back to my bedroom hearing the faint concerned whispers and sighs.
After a few minutes passed, Kyler came into my room. I rolled to the edge of my bed and sat up, tired of dealing with everything. “What?” I asked, trying to sound as polite as possible.
“Reni, that wasn’t very nice. They’re just worried about you.” He reasoned as he sat down beside me.
“You’re siding with them?” I asked sharply.
“There’s no them. We’re all one team. Look, I’m willing to give you space but talking about it helps.” He trailed off before adding, “It was my baby too.”
Silence passed and hung heavily in the air. I looked away from his piercing gaze. “I know but I can’t say I’m sorry though. I’m hurting and I really can’t deal with it.” He sighed at my answer. “I know it’s not an excuse but this is the second time in less than a month that Jay had to come see me in New York. I can see that I’m even burdening you. When I go to bed, you stay up all night to catch up on work. I can see you exhaustion. You don’t have to stay with me all day.”
Kyler looked up at me in surprise. “You … know? I always left the bed just as you fell asleep.”
“I’m not stupid Kyler. I’m suffering in the mix of good and bad memories. I wake up in the middle of the night. I haven’t been sleeping properly. I don’t have to go out to your study to know you’re working.”
His face fell. “You haven’t been sleeping. Damn. Sorry, I’ll be there tonight.”
“Just go to work.” I turned away and laid back down.

I walked out the next day, feeling slightly better knowing that Kyler was going to work. I didn’t even have to move from my room to know he wasn’t in the villa. The place felt … empty without him. I saw a car drive up the driveway and I recognised it straight away.
