Chapter 54 - But I Can't

It was hard.

It was awkward around Niall now. You can't simply just go from best friends to lovers to friends again. I know we're on a break meaning we're pausing the relationship to get away. We didn't break up. If we broke up then we definitely wouldn't get back together. That's why their called ex's. We just paused the relationship so we can start where we left off later.

We weren't comfortable around each other.

All the guys knew. Even the girls. They didn't mention it.

College started today. I got up at like 7 to take my shower and do my hair. I put on mascara and eyeliner.

I walk into the kitchen at 8. In my black 'Free hugs' shirt, my shorts, and a pair of black converses. They were all sitting eating breakfast.

"Good morning, Kate." Liam smiles.

Everyone looks at me.

"Good morning." They chorus.

Niall stared down at his food. When he finally decided to look up at me, he eyed me up and down.

"Where are ya going, b- love?" He corrects himself.

"College starts today, remember? I have to be there in about thirty minutes." I tell everyone.

"Well, hurry. Ya gotta eat breakfast." Zayn pushes me into a chair. He sets a plate of food infront of me.

"I need someone to drive me." I remind, taking a bite of bacon.

Liam, Harry, and Louis looked at Niall who stared at his food, pushing it around with his fork.

He just isn't himself anymore. Normal Niall would have devoured that meal.

Zayn offered right away making the three boys glare at him.

"No, Zayn. You have to come with me to the store remember?" Harry hints.

"Noooo." Zayn tells him.

"Well, ya do!" Louis sasses. Zayn opened his mouth to say something before Liam cut in.

"I have to go visit Danielle and Louis has get ready to go visit his family, Zayn and Harry have their thing. Niall, why don't you take her?" He says quickly.

Niall looks up at him, then over to me. A cute little smile rests on his lips. "Yeah, I'll take ya, Katie." He nods before taking a bite of sausage. He eats a fork full of eggs.

The three boys smile. Zayn furrows his eyebrows.

"What just happened?" He mumbles.

"You don't know when to shut up and figure out the plan along the way. 'Oh, I'll do it' no. We're tryna remove the awkward tension and restore best mates while you're just over there like a clueless dope." Louis sasses.

Zayn cocks his head back.

Niall and I blush, exchanging looks.

I eat my last piece of bacon. "I'm gonna go wait for you to get done." I tell him sweetly.

He smiles, standing up. "I just gotta go get dressed and we'll be on our way." He flashes me a heart melting grin.

I just wanna wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him. But I can't.

"Katie, here. You never took it." Zayn holds the iPhone out to me.

I smile, taking it. I stuff it in my pocket. He yelps in surprise as I tackle him in a hug. "I'm sorry I've been ignoring you." I smile up at him.
