"Where could they be?" Meilin asked as she laid Rollan down against the pack he was using earlier. He winced.
"Sorry." She said crouching next to him.
"I'm fine." He grinned leaning on his left arm so he was facing her. "Or I will be."
Meilin smiled. "Let's hope."
"Briggan!" Shane cried from behind her just as Essix screeched. She turned just in time to see Briggan barreling towards them.
"Briggan?" She said stunned. Briggan stopped right in front of her barking and howling. "What is it?"
Briggan howled and took off in the opposite direction. "I think he's trying to lead me to them." Meilin said with a sigh. "I'm going to have to follow him." She looked back at Rollan. "Ok?"
Rollan nodded slowly and she stood. "Don't be gone too long."
She nodded, grabbed her quarterstaff and ran after Briggan hoping that Conner and Tasha were alright. Wherever they were. After a while if running, Meilin's thighs burned from exhaustion. They'd gone a long way until Briggan finally stopped at a crevasse.
"They're in there?" She asked him. Briggan barked. She assumed that meant yes. Meilin peered over the side, careful not o fall in herself. It was deep. It went down so far she could see into endless darkness. It reminded her of the sulfur sea brow the Arachne fields. Maybe there was water down there. Meilin shook her head, clearing her thoughts. She had to focus. On a ledge, about 15 feet down, as Meilin calculated, was Conner and Tasha.
"Meilin!" They both called waving their arms and hands.
"Guys! How did you get down there?" She asked gripping the edge.
Even from up here she could see Conner's cheeks blush bright red. "We were looking for flowers." He said shyly.
It wasn't until then did she notice the flowery fields around them and the dead flowed scattered around their feet on the ledge.
"Why?" Meilin asked. A weird time to pick flowers.
"Uh...well..." Conner stammered. "I'll explain later."
Meilin nodded. Why they were picking flowers wasn't their biggest problem right now. She had to get them out. "I'll need a rope...hey, they should have rope back at camp!" She said more to herself than to anyone else. "I'll be right back!" She called and sprinted back the way she came with her remaining energy. I hope I can remember the way I came, Meilin thought. Luckily, seconds later, Briggan bounded next to her.
"Thanks. I might need some help getting back." She said between breaths Briggan howled and ran ahead leading the way.
They sure went a long way. Meilin thought as she and Briggan sprinted along through he flowery fields. Why pick flowers now? And couldn't they have least waited till she and Rollan returned so they wouldn't worry? It just didn't sound like something Conner would do. Conner was pretty responsible so was it Tasha's idea to pick flowers? Why?
Meilin shook her head as they approached camp. I need a rope.
