Ruby: I mean 24 tops
Karen: No, 26. At least
Ruby: Did you see his uh...
Karen: Ruby!
Ruby: Sorry, it's big.
Karen: EW!
Ruby: Come on, you know you're curious now.
Karen: Don't you have a boyfriend you should be staring at instead of our music teacher?
Ruby: Who? Fillmore? I don't think he seriously likes me...
Karen: Oh...
Ruby: Oh is someone disappointed that she won't have her music teacher ALL to herself?
Karen: NO!
Ruby: I'm pretty sure the entire female school population is staring at that man.
Karen: Plus Firkle Ike and Leo?
Ruby: Yeah. LMFAO XD
Karen: Hey, Ruby. This is Ike. Just wanted to let you know the teacher's staring at you. Oh, and the music teacher's not really my type... I doubt Firkle would be the least bit interested either... Gross. BYE!
Ruby: fuck.
"Detention."
"Yeah, whatever." She looked across the room at Ike who was waving goofily and Karen who hid her face in the desk next to him.
The music class was quiet and Fredrick thought it was weird how all the girls were in the first two rows of class. What was weirder was the smiling conformist who saved him a seat in the front row. "I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Karen."
He took a seat and laid his head on his arm. It was the last class of the day. Nap time. Karen looked over and puffed her cheeks out.
"Hmm..." He was knocked out. That wasn't good, he would fail this fascinating class. Karen couldn't let her friend down. She leaned in close took a deep breath and-
"FREDRIIIICK!!!"
He flailed around and screamed. "What the fuck!" Karen laughed and everyone was staring. He clenched his jaw trying not to curse anymore. "What the hell did you do that for?"
"You looked like you needed a little push. So I gave you a big push. It's Fredrick right?" His eye twitched.
"No shit."
She squealed clapping and the vein in his forehead began to throb. "Yes! I remembered your name! That's a huge accomplishment. I mean, I'm not good at the whole memorizing names thing or the whole socializing thing."
"But aren't you Ike's best friend?" She shook her head.
"That's Ruby. I do consider myself Ruby's best friend though."
He smiled. "How does that work?" Karen thought for a second.
"Uh...." The smirk was bigger now.
"Don't worry. I'm out of touch with my friend group too." Karen's face turned red.
"I am not out of touch with my friends." She sounded offended and shocked.
"Your best friend won't even sit up front with you." His smirk was soft but Karen looked a little annoyed.
"She sat with me during fourth period. You know, Ms. Boobie's class. Where were you anyway? I mean Marsh threw a fit, no one did their essay except Leo and Ike. You know Ike doesn't want his grade to drop any further, he's little prince perfect. So where were you?"
Fredrick's face hit the table. "Why the hell do you care where I was in the morning."
"It was more like evening. Third period... Why are so grumpy all of a sudden?" Only a groan escaped him.
She pouted then stood next to his desk. She ran a hand through his hair and let out a sigh.
"Come on... I didn't mean to piss you off... I'm sorry, I usually don't ask questions."
I'm sorry.
That phrase annoyed him. Shera had said it so many times as he cried in her room. After a while, it seemed like she was just saying it to get him to leave. "Leave me alone." He mumbled. The conversation was coming back to him. He hated it.
He was remembering the warm embrace that was nothing but pity when he felt a sharp jab to his side.
He jolted up shielding his side, he wasn't quick enough to block the next attack to his stomach. He laughed out loud almost falling over.
"Sto-" She continued to tickle him. "STOP!" She stepped back cheerful.
"Yay, you're all smiley now. Feel better?" He had a dumb smile on his face but he really felt like flipping her off.
You need someone who makes you smile, someone who doesn't give up on you.
Why was Shera's dumb lecture ringing in his mind? More importantly, why was Karen still smiling at him waiting for a response?
"Uh sure... So.. What instrument are you going to play?"
She smiled bigger. "IT WORKED! Freddy's all smiles again!" A dumb blush spread across his cheeks. He usually hated that nickname. "I'm playing the flute. What are you playing?"
"Uh... I-" For a split second, Fredrick wondered why every student ran past him and out of the class Karen's words brought him back to Earth.
"That's the bell..." She headed for the door as he packed up his things. "bye, Fredrick!" There was that damn blush again. Why the hell was he smiling so big? Fuck.
