"Why was the boy not killed?!"

"I'm sorry master I do not know what happened. When the boy made his presence clear this feeling came rushing over me, I had to flee." Mia Raven knelt on the cold dark concrete floor, her head lowered to her master. Her dark dress was tinged from murky water left behind by the Great Lords' previous lackey. She locked fearful eyes with the floor knowing full well what her punishment would be for failing at her task. This fear was dampened however by the aroma of mermaid blood lingering in the water.

"I told you that this boy is a threat to me! Do you wish for me to fall from my power?!" Jarnst slammed his fist against his throne. He dawned over the girl as the throne was elevated to be half the size of an average man. Mia knelt just before the third step that led to the Great Lords' seat. It was made from nyanide, a material rarer than diamond and twice as strong. Jarnst forced his dwarves to look for it in every single nook and cranny of every volcanic mountain.

"I do not wish you to fall my lord but I could not do anything but run. The feeling he gave me i-it scared me. 300 hundred years my lord, nothing has ever scared me then this boy comes and suddenly I feel as if he were the monster." Mia's voice now shook, her eyes held back the tears she knew would burn through the concrete. Mia knew she could not cry in front of her master but the boy she spoke of reminded her of someone she had trouble forgetting. Mia heard footsteps descend from the throne so she bit her lip hard until a small amount of blood pooled in place of her fang, she was waiting for the worst.

"Mia," His voice whispered her name all over the large rectangle room as if the wind was making his voice its own. "Stand my child." Mia stood, her face glum, still focused on the floor. "Have some respect and look at me." Jarnst demanded. Mia reluctantly removed her stare from the hard concrete wishing away the venom tears gathering in her tear ducts.

"I'm sorry master. My respect and loyalty for you is never ending, I would gladly die at your hands if you wish it." She bit her lip hard once again in the same spot re-creating the puncture from before.

Jarnst flung his hands out into a wide arc his cloak pulled away to reveal the pale skin of his abdomen. Mia stood completely still fighting the urge to run and save herself. She couldn't stop her eyes from shaking and as hard as she tried the tears were winning the battle of freedom.

She had always dreaded the moment when he would use his dark power on her. She dreaded the same thing she saw happen to many others, others that disobeyed her master, others that failed their mission or leaked information about him to the council. She saw them scream in pain as he mentally tortured them. Those who were allowed to survive told her it felt like millions of needles, heated to the temperature of the sun, continuously piercing your skin. Jarnst then lit them on fire making sure to stop right before the top layer of their skin was all burned off. The executioners would then slowly place cuts onto the body putting them through hell before he sent them there.

Knock knock.

"What?"

"Ms Raven, the Great Lord requests that you when you have stopped crying he would like you to join him for dinner." The voice of a young woman barely sounded at the two large golden doors.

"Thank you Nicky, I'll be there shortly." With a quiver in her voice Mia answered. She quickly wiped away the tears that streamed down her face and waited for the trail of skin to heal. Mia had no idea how vampires could cry or why their own venom burned them. She dismissed the thought as soon as she realised that Nicky was still standing at her door, breathing softly. "Yes Nicky? Was there something else?"

"Oh umm I ju-ju-just wanted to know if you're ok and all?" Nicky asked the question in a manner that would make a person think she was the one who was crying. She tapped her hand lightly against the door, resting it there. Nicky was herself surprised that the Great Lord had not tortured Mia but instead gave her a hug.

Nicky stood at the foot of the entrance peeking through the slightly opened doors. She too thought the worst would happen and that Mia was to be executed. The moment the Great Lord raised his hands she felt petrified. Her core was shaking, rumbling so hard her legs nearly buckled. Nicky had never seen someone be tortured before. She recounted the moments when Mia would open up to her and tell her everything, things about her past that made her heart so stone cold, things that made her socially-incompatible, things that made her get out of bed in the morning. Nicky whispered a final good-bye before the Great Lord slowly motioned his hands down to curve around Mia's body and then clenched tight to pull her into a hug.

"Yes, I am fine thank you Nicky." Nicky pulled her hand away and brushed the strands of golden blonde hair back behind her pointed ear. She then wiped away the small pool that gathered in her big slanted eye and replied.

"I'll be in the main quarters when you want to talk to me, ok?"

"Ok Nicky, thank you."

Mia let out a sigh and let her head fall onto her pillow. She stared at the ceiling, covered in paintings of nature in its truest form, and waited for Nicky’s light clicks to disappear. ‘A father.. Your father.’ Jarnst had whispered these two words into her ear.  She played them over and over again, relishing them every time she did. “A father.. You feel like my father.”

Mia started to cry once again. She cried because she never felt the loving hug from a father. She never had a man around to teach her about boys. Mia had no father to protect her from the bullies, she had no father whom she could run to and he would hug her and listen to her while she ranted. Mia had no father, no mother or any siblings, she was alone in the world. This is why Jarnst’s actions had such an impact on her. She realised how he stood up for her when the circle wanted to kill her upon her arrival. She realised that it was from him that she learned how to do many things. He taught her how to hunt, how to compel, to know her limits and how to think before acting. When the circle ever attempted to have her assassinated her would retaliate accordingly against the circle. She realised that she now had a father, she had always had a father, but never realised it because of obvious reasons. She never had a father before.

If people saw things from Mia’s point of view then they would think that he isn’t a bad man after all. But, looks can be deceiving and so can actions. In front of that man who cares about one girl is a man who could care less about his own dying biological child. A man who could care less about the people in a village, people he would have murdered relentlessly and brute-fully. Maybe he doesn’t actually care about anything. Maybe not even about this teen-aged vampire, maybe she poses a threat to him. Keep your fiends close and your enemies closer right?
