The town was busy as Shadow and I walked through the twilight. People watched us and whispered but my confidence was returning with Shadow at my side. My arm was on his and I leaned against his shoulder trying to forget my aching heart.
"I didn't want to ask in front of Emmett, but what happened when you went to your father's study. You looked like you had been crying." I look up at Shadow and his sapphire eyes study my face trying to decode it.
"My fiance was killed by the Lisstarian army. Alvar would have been safe if I had kept my previous engagement to Houston of Lisstar, but I feel in love and became blind to what would happen. He paid for my mistake with his life and that of his family." I say and Shadow pulls me into an embrace as I realize that my cheeks were wet with tears.
"I'm so sorry. If I could spare you this pain I would." He hugs me until I finally pull away. I see Lilith watching us from one of the temples and I pull Shadow towards her.
"I am sorry about your engagement, Allura. I promise your sacrifices will not be made in vain." I nod as she leads us into the Greek themed temple. There were murals on the walls depicting the mother of all dragons. I stop in front of one that shows a girl around my age standing in front of large armies. The next scene shows her, dead, in a guy's arms. I walk to the end where the girl is laid on an altar and her magic is freed from her body and the dragons are protected once more.
"The girl in the mural is me isn't it?" I ask Lilith who approaches me. "I die in the end. I don't get a happily ever after." I mutter to myself as I realize that my sacrifices would only be paid in my everlasting peace not a happy life afterwards.
"Yes, the girl is you. Your magic will be returned to the earth in which it came and all will be restored in the realms. Shadow will live to see your work fulfilled and he will keep your legacy alive." It was unfair how Shadow was going to live to see the end but I was going to have to come to grips with the fact that nothing in my life was ever going to end ok.
"That's not fair." Shadow protests. "Allura can't die. She's supposed to lead us and I'm just supposed to support her. This can't end like that." But one look at my face and Shadow falls silent. "ALlura, please don't accept this." His pleads break my heart but I knew that he would understand in due time.
"I'll leave you two alone." Lilith disappears before I can respond and I stand there looking at the murals on the wall.
"It's my destiny." I whisper as I go back to the beginning to see how all of this started. My mother was pregnant with me when she was approached by the mother of dragons to give the baby a gift. However, my mother would not live to see her daughter grow up as was the conditions of this gift. I would be sent away from harm to one day return when the time was right. The mural skips large portions of my story but the main things are there.
"At least I won't make Alvar a widower when I died." I say trying to make things look brighter.
"Stop talking like you're going to die." Shadow grabs me by my shoulders. "You are going to see your work completed. The Dragon Gods can be damned if thier magic isn't returned to them. You are going to live to be an old woman and you're going to raise children and then see your grandchildren grow up." Shadow's face is moistened with his fresh tears.
"You can't stop fighting, not after I just started loving you." I didn't have time to process that before Shadow's lips are pressed against mine. The voices from the dragons stop but I can't fall for another man. I push him away before I touch my lips.
"I can't do this." I run off towards the street. Shadow tries to follow me but a dragon swoops down and picks me up so I can leave in peace.
