I know that in every war movie I've ever watched, it can't actually portray the sheer brutality of the conflict. But no one could have told me how brutal this war was. Onyx flew high above carnage but I saw all the bodies littering the ground. What scared me the most, was that most of the armor they were wearing, belonged to the Pavlarian army.
"We need to land." I tell Onyx as I see the royal banner. "I can't tell from up here." He obeys and we spiral down. I dismount off of his back. "Stay in the clouds and I'll call you if I need anything." I tell him.
"But your father..." Onyx starts to argue.
"My father wouldn't want you to attract attention to me." I assure him and the dragon flies off. "Anyways, I need to to do this alone." I whisper to the bodies around me.
I found so many dead soldiers and I spent a lot of time closing their vacant eyes. I couldn't imagine finding my fiance's body like that, so I would hope someone would do the same.
The battle field was filled with the suffocating silence that only accompanies the dead. This is the sound of suffering. No words can truly show you what lay before me, but as I stopped at another dead body, the realization started to hit me. I might not even find his body in all of this.
"Help me please." A coarse voice calls and I look around trying to pin point the noise. I finally find the body that accompanied the sound and I run over to help. The man, or what was left of him, lay on the ground surrounded by a pool of blood. I kneel down next to him and I try to look calm and brave for him.
"I didn't think you heard me." The man croaks. His hair falls down into his eyes and I gently brush it away. His green eyes stare back at me. "I didn't want to be alone when it...." I knew what he was talking about.
"You won't be alone." I whisper to him as I get down on the ground. I put the man's head in my lap. The man was going to die. His legs were blown clean off and his blood was flowing out like rivers moistening the land.
"Will you sing to me?" He asks and I feel taken aback. "My mother used to always sing me to sleep." His words are already getting weaker.
"Of course." I say as I try to think of something.
"Soldiers fight for the land and sea, Fighting to protect the land from thee, Magic spills blood like never before, Taking the soldiers from our shores, Bravery and their hopes paid the price, loved ones weep at the sacrifice, Soldier close your eyes and rest, some day your body will be laid to rest, you will never be truly alone, I'll keep you company till the end, leave now your battle has come to an end." I sing to him and his eyes slowly close.
"Beautiful singing." A man's voice says from behind me. I slowly put the man on the ground and I get to my feet. When I look at the man my heart leaps in my chest. I run into his arms.
"Alvar, I barely recognized you." I say as tears fall down my face.
"Allura?" He asks as he studies my face. Alvar leans down and kisses me passionately. "I missed you so much." He says as he pulls away from me. I bury my head in his chest as I try to stop the tears. "Wait, what are you doing here?"
"Liam came to the valley and said there was a battle. I feared that you were dead so I had to come see for myself." I explain. "Are you hurt?" I look over his body but thankfully my love was ok. "I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I lost you." I tell him as I lean against his chest.
"Allura you can't be here. People are angry that you ran away and so many people are talking about turning you in." He tells me as he strokes my hair gently. "I won't be able to take care of my kingdom if I'm worried abotu you."
"Then let me fight with you. I can take care of myself now and I wouldn't be able to go back there if you were still putting your life in danger for me. I've learned all that the mages can teach me and I know that I'm ready, Alvar." I plead with him.
"Allura, it's not that simple. You need to be safe."
"I can't be safe if you're in danger. I would rather die than find out Houston got to you. I can't lose you."
"If you come with me, things are not going to be easy. THere's a price on your head and right now the Lisstarians will do anything to have your blood and only that. They want you dead...." I put my arms around his neck and I pull him down for a kiss. I feel the desperation in both of our bodies as we make up for lost time."
"I will love you forever, Alvar." I tell him. I hear Onyx in my thoughts and I turn towards the forest. He's urging me to come home because someone was coming. "Alvar where is your army?" I ask as I look around and I only see him.
"What are you talking about Allura?" He asks and I pull away. I look at him wondering if this really was my fiance.
"Where did you take me when we first met?" I ask and I watch Alvar closely. It was a simple question but the man standing in front of me didn'treply. "When did I tell you how I felt about us?" I ask knowing that we admitted our feelings during the my first royal ball. "Where did we have our first kiss?" Again no answer.
I step back because this man isn't my fiance. I try to calm my emotions to keep Onyx from worrying about me. I slide my hand down to the hilt of my sword and I quickly draw it. The man desguised as Alvar waves a hand and the spell fades away and Houston is standing there.
"Well Allura, it seems that you've grown up these past six months. The old Allura wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between the real Alvar and my dusguise. I'm impressed."
"I'm not going with you." I tell him. "I'm not yours anymore."
"On the contrary, you will always be mine. Your father and my father bonded us when you were born. You cannot break this vow, Allura. Regardless if you agree with it or not." He doesn't know then that my father isn't the king of Relaine. I try to contain a smile.
"But what if I wasn't his to give? If I wasn't his child the vow would be void and I would be free to choose my own destiny." I tell him and he glares at me. "Despite what Eric believes, I'm not actually his daughter. I belong to another bloodline so I'm not even royalty therefore, I'm of no use to you anymore." I tell him and I am blasted back by his magic.
"How dare you speak to me!" He screams and I feel the air surrounding me start to disappear. I lay there gasping for air until I remember the magic my father and the mages taught me. I concentrate and the spell breaks away. I catch my breath.
"You have no right to treat me like this." I say as I stand up. The magic inside of me swells to the surface. "I'm not anyone's. I don't belong to you or any other person besides myself. My magic is my own and my heart belongs to me and me alone." I say as anger boils over. I feel myself lose control and my magic spills over.
