The sirens blaring were deafening. I watched as a barrage of SUVs and police cars chased a motorcycle racing through an underground parking garage I'd never seen before. There was another car between the motorcycle and the cops trying, but failing, to get next to the motorcycle.
Suddenly, an all black figure sprang out of the shadows and onto the motorcycle, knocking it and it's rider off the road. The car screeched to a stop and Steve stumbled out, immediately whipping his shield in the direction of where the motorcycle had slid. Just as it was about to hit the black figure in the back of the head, it stuck it's hand up and caught it without even looking. It threw the shield down in disgust before turning back to the rider and punching them in the face. The rider turned over and started to stand, exposing his face for the first time since my dream had begun. I tried to scream, as I had so many times before, and as always, nothing came out.
Bucky kicked his attacker in the shins, but he didn't fall. Instead, they grabbed him and threw him into the wall. Bucky crashed into it, dust and pieces of concrete raining down onto the floor. Steve ran over, picking his shield up on his way, and slammed it into the assailant's side. He retaliated by jumping up and using both feet to push Steve back. Steve went flying into a pillar several feet away, bouncing off of it before landing on the ground limply.
The figure turned back to Bucky, who was now standing, and punched him yet again. He was struggling to stay conscious now, and the thing beating him could see that. Before Bucky could do anything, he wrapped one of his hands around his neck and held him against the wall. Bucky hit at him with his metal fist, but the other seemed unharmed as he kept beating him with his free hand. Bucky's head lolled to the side as the figure lifted his fist for what looked like a final blow. Again, I tried to scream, but nothing came out.
"No, God, no!"
I woke up, panting, my mind racing. I raked my hands through my hair, trying to pull myself together and think straight. Bucky's hand was suddenly on my back, and without thinking, I flinched away from him. He instantly sat up, pushed the blankets away and furrowing his eyebrows at me.
"Cara, what's wrong?" He whispered.
I shook my head in response and moved back over towards him, wrapping my arms around his neck. He put his hands on my back softly, pulling me into his lap.
"Did you see the, uh, something?"
"No," I lied. "No. Just a dream."
"You wanna talk about it?" He asked huskily, stroking the side of my face lazily.
"No," I murmured. "Thanks, but no. Just go back to sleep."
I put my face in his chest as he laid down again, pulling the sheets back over us. He brushed my hair off my forehead slowly, carefully studying my face.
"You sure?"
"Yes, Buck, I'm fine."
His eyes fluttered closed and he exhaled loudly. "If you say so. If you change your mind, just let me know. I'm here. I....I...."
I looked up and saw that he had fallen asleep again. His bare chest rose and fell steadily under my cheek, his heart beating in my ear. I was surprised at how comforting it was- knowing for certain that he was right there with me. I closed my eyes and moved even closer to him, falling asleep in a matter of moments.
*******
What felt like minutes later, I was rudely awakened by our bedroom door flying open and the light being turned on. I groaned and buried my face in the pillows, trying to avoid the light. Bucky sat up groggily and stared at Sam, who stood in the doorway.
