I woke up the next morning to a cold bed. Bucky was no longer next to me, and the sheets that he had been sleeping under were neatly tucked back into the mattress. The shower was on in the ensuite, and a bit of sunlight lit the room from the window. I sat up slowly, staring at the bathroom door and feeling extremely nervous. The water stopped running suddenly, and I heard him moving about. My heart started beating faster, and my mouth suddenly felt like the goddamn Sahara Desert. After a few more minutes of silence, the bathroom door opened.
Bucky walked out, a white towel hanging loosely off his hips. He stopped shortly when he realized I was awake and hesitated for a few moments.
"Morning," he said finally.
"Hey."
Drops of water rolled down his chest as we stared at each other in complete silence. I hugged my knees to my chest while he slowly moved across the room and began to gather his clothes.
"Did you sleep okay?" He asked softly, pulling a pair of boxers on under his towel and removing it from his waist.
"We did what they say you shouldn't do," I changed the subject abruptly.
Bucky looked confused, and rose one eyebrow. "What, fucked before marriage?"
"No, Bucky I'm serious."
"So am I! We go far enough-" he stopped shortly upon seeing my face. "Sorry, not funny. What were you referring to?"
I sighed and looked away from him. "We went to sleep angry."
"We did?"
"Yes, we did."
"I wouldn't say angry, I would say hostile."
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Still."
Bucky sighed and walked over to the bed, sitting down in front of me. "Alright, what's going on?"
I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and hesitated slightly. "Okay, we have these fights and arguments, right? And we talk about them through sometimes, and that's really good, but other times we just ignore it. It's like we think that if we just crumple the conflict up and throw it in the garbage can that it'll be done forever, but it won't.
"Then in even bigger fights the old arguments get picked out of the garbage can and thrown back in the other person'a face. And that's how people start thinking they could've changed the past, and blaming the other person for the shit that happened in the past, and that's how relationships end, and-" my voice broke off suddenly and I looked back up at him slowly.
"And I don't want to be those people," I whispered.
Bucky put his hand on my knee softly. "We're not those people. We're never going to be those people, Cara." He moved a little closer to me. "Last night was not something ordinary for us. We were both tired and stressed, and we both said some stuff we didn't really mean. I promise you, I'm going to do everything I possibly can to prevent us from being those people."
He moved his hand to my cheek and brushed his thumb across my lips silently. I kissed his hand gently before moving forward and wrapping my arms around his neck. His were immediately glued to my waist as he buried his face in my neck.
"I missed you so much," he murmured.
I responded by kissing him and shifting so that I was sitting in his lap. His hands flew to the hem of my tee shirt, and he began to lift it. Just as he started, there was an abrupt knock on the door. We both stopped, Bucky clearly as aggravated as I was.
