POSSESSIVE
"Do you think the sales for In Another Life will increase by next week if we lower the price?" Daniel's eyes scan over the paper of statistics between us. Numbers don't lie and just by looking I could already tell they wouldn't.
That book has been in stores for nearly two months and after the first month people seemed to loose interest. The price wasn't the problem though, it's the quality of the book. I've read it and will admit that it could've been written better. Sarah Shaman is an amazing author, but she should stick to writing non-fiction pieces.
"I think we need to do some hella good promo. Sarah will be willing to help us out with that," I tell him, turning the page. "Yeah, we definitely need some promo. This book is as good as dead right now. "We're getting absolutely nothing out of a book that's not selling, so this is our only option.
"We can start planning the meeting with her after lunch. Maybe in a week or so she can come up here and talk with us," he suggests, looking into my eyes. "We'll surely be able to save this book if we put in the effort."
One thing I was already beginning to like about Daniel was his amazing work ethic. It's his first week with me since his promotion and he had no excuses for not being able to carry out what was expected of him. That shows me that he really cares about the well being of this publishing company as well as the authors.
A firm knock on the door makes me jump in my seat. Daniel chuckles before standing up to open it. When he does, I have to struggle to keep my mouth close at who was there. Harry, with two sodas in hand. I don't drink soda so that means...
"Daniel, right? This is for you." Harry hands him one with a smile. "I don't know what you like, but I figured everyone likes Sprite so."
"Oh," Daniel looks at the cup as if it was an unexpected Christmas gift. "Thanks, man." He then opens the door more so Harry could come in.
"Hey, Y/N," he greets, hugging me when I stand from my seat.
"Hi, what are you doing here?" I question, pulling away. He usually tells me before he comes. I pray to God that he wasn't planning anything stupid. It's hard for me to tell whether or not his jealousy towards Daniel is gone.
"I can't visit my girlfriend during her break?" He raises a brow. "That's a new one."
I smile and roll my eyes. "Daniel, this is my boyfriend," I tell him. "He's a such a pain," I semi-seriously joke. Daniel smiles at that and Harry lets out a humorless laugh.
"We both know that you're the real pain," Harry retorts back. "Always disagreeing with my tactics." He shakes his head in mock disapproval.
Daniels voice emerges in the midst of our bickering, "Opposites attract."
I can't even begin to explain how true that statement is. Hence the whole Daniel thing. I'm very good with tolerating certain things, while Harry isn't. I'm actually surprised he hasn't spit any suggestive remarks yet. Hopefully our talk yesterday encouraged him to change the way he acts in situations as such.
After Daniel and I finish eating, Harry having already eaten, we find ourselves laughing over the stories Daniel was telling. When his business-like side is tucked away he's actually a pretty cool guy. He almost reminds me of my younger brother. I'd definitely like to get to know him better.
"If you liked the idea of forensics so much, how did you end up working for a publishing company?" Harry questions, seeming interested.
Daniel lets out a sigh and his eyes briefly flicker downwards.
"My education route didn't go as I planned. When my mom passed away it hit me hard. She always loved reading so I decided to become part of the reason books are shared with world," he explains. "If that makes sense." He sadly smiles.
My heart drops for him. "It makes sense. I can only imagine how loosing someone that close to you feels," I say.
"Sorry if I made you think about it," Harry apologizes.
Daniel shakes his head. "No. I think about her everyday. She was too full of life for me to be sad about loosing her," he assures.
If not before, Harry knows now not to jump to bad conclusions of people before meeting them. We are humans after all; not all of us are bad.
____Thanks for reading!____
Not sure how I feel about this one.
I graduate next week, so turn up.
I'm gonna miss my friends.
Hopefully high school won't be as bad as people say it'll be.
