Chapter 11: In The Night
{D.K}
The sky was dark, the clouds had turned a shade so dull and grey the only blame could be sent to the moon that neglected to make an appearance. It was cold, the wind blew viciously, whistling loudly, making everyone aware that it seeked attention. Dakota's skin rose with goosebumps, and it was now that she'd become aware of her poor attire. The thin t-shirt and short pink pajama bottoms she wore that stopped midthigh.
"Dakota," A whisky voice called out. Her head whipped to the side, her hair flying around behind her as the winds pushed through the strands harshly. Her eyes searched for the source of the calling, but no culprit came forth. Now, Dakota could hear everything, she was hyper aware of each noise around her. The rustling of the leaves in the trees, the crunches that sounded from the breaking of twigs. "I'm going to find you, child."
"Who's there?"
"I am going to find this child if it kills me." Rebekah angrily sneers, her fingers tapping away at her laptop.
Dakota was ripped from her dream, the short nap she took being anything but refreshing. Across from her sat Anges, a witch that was asked to watch her for the day. After last night, with a witch being killed and one of Marcel's closest men breaking the most absolute rule: Don't kill a vampire. Everyone was on edge. "Agnes, you really don't have to stay, Rebekah here and I'm sure she'll be excellent company after she stops searching every abandoned attic in New Orleans."
Rebekah sent Dakota the finger and continued along with her search to find Davina, the teenage witch that had been responsible for keeping get Elijah from being found. "As much as I'd love to leave, I can't help but notice that since you've arrived, you haven't had a checkup."
"Not like I can walk into the Quarter and ask for an ultrasound. I told Marcel I was a vampire, so everyone addresses me as a vampire. Vampires don't need ultrasounds, because vampires don't get pregnant."
"Plenty of women would kill to have a child," The blonde spoke, her attention clearly elsewhere as her voice was airy and not all that interested. "I find it odd you aren't taking better care of yours."
"I feed it, talk to it, and let it hitch a free ride in my body. I even take those disgusting prenatal vitamins that you shove down my throat Bekah, my baby is taken care of."
For the first time, Rebekah averted her eyes from the laptop, taking a second to glance back at Dakota. "Even so, we want to make sure that child is in baby heaven. Agnes set up an appointment for you."
"In the Quarter?"
Agnes shook her head, her voice soft and soothing, like a mother's. "No, in the bayou by another witch. I even did it after hours to limit the risk of you being spotted associating with the witches."
Dakota smiled, but it was obviously strained and fake. "Bayou baby doctor it is. I've always wanted to see that alligators and talk to the swamp creatures."
Rebekah rolled her baby blues, turned back to the screen. "Careful, poke fun and they might eat you."
"You wouldn't let them." The blonde stayed quiet, because she knew it was true.

"I could've been out at that party that they have tonight at the square, but instead you drove me an hour out into the middle of nowhere."
Agnes was still dressed in her usual attire, a purple dress with gold chains hanging from her neck, more gold bands on her fingers and a purple turban to cover her curly hair. "Dr. Paige is only this far out because Marcels men have been terrorizing her patients." Dakota stared distrustfully at the wooden house painted red. "Go, she won't bite."
"I will."
Every move she took was hesitant, and she didn't even stop for pleasantries to knock on the door, she just walked in. "Dakota, I was expecting you."
"Really?"
"Yes, head on over to that room. I'll be there in a moment."
She obliged, laying down on the examining table, lifting her shirt to show her belly that was starting to look a bit bigger. The room smelled sterile and clean, and the underlying scene of bleach had her fingers twitching with discomfort. "How long will this take?"
Dr. Paige shook the bottle that held the gel, opening the top and hovering it over her stomach. "It's cold." The feeling wasn't that bad, but Dakota still flinched. "And not long, dear. Stay still for me please." She took the ultrasound, the steady sound of a heartbeat coming from the monitor. "Your baby's heartbeat is very strong, sounds perfect."
"Can you tell what it is?"
After a few more minutes of looking around the woman nodded. "It's a girl."
Dakota smiled brightly, accepting the towel given to her to wipe the gel from her stomach. "She's going to be spoiled rotten."
"Big family?"
She suddenly shut down, not feeling comfortable sharing any more information than nescessary. "Something like that. Can I go now?"
"You're blood pressures a bit high, but I've got something for it."
When the doctor walked away, Dakota responded to a text from Rebekah who wanted to know where she was. After answering, Dakota's attention was piqued when another car pulled up, all four doors opening, strangers coming out. "I'm not that good with pills." She rushed out when Dr. Paige came back with a bottle and water.
"Me neither."
The hairs on Dakota's skin raised up and she suddenly felt very unsafe with all of these unfamiliar faces. When she turned to face Paige, she held a needle in her hand. Dakota swatted her hand away, using the other to smash the white lady's head onto the countertop. While destracted, she used the needle and put it in Dr. Paiges neck.
The four who stood by Agnes, turned to see the comotion, running forward when they saw the body on the floor. Dakota slammed the it shut, locking the door. It juggled furiously, all of them trying to get in but Dakota opened the window and jumped out into the night.
Everything looked too familiar now, the trees, the dark skies and dull grey clouds. "Dakota," The whispy voice called out. "I'm going to find you, child."
