Chapter 41: War Room

{D. K}

Wind blew through her hair and she sat on the roof, her feet dangling over the side as she leaned back and allowed herself to relax for the first time in a week. "I figured I'd find you up here." Elijah walked up to her, the woman not moving an inch. "Klaus called, it seemed our wolves have disappeared."

"Maybe they got distracted and started playing fetch. Typical dog problem."

"If only that were it," His voice trailed off as he lifted his pants slightly, taking a seat beside her. "Dakota, you're worrying me."

Looking at him out the corner of her eyes, she scoffed. "Don't be, I'm a big girl."

"I know that you are capable of much, but one thing you aren't the best that is hiding how you feel. "

Dakota moved away from the edge, standing up and wiping the dust off her black leggings. "That's not true."

"How?"

"Do you see the hate on my face? See how it makes my chest burn and fingers twitch. Can you see the fear in my eyes? How scared I am that if I don't come outside remind myself that this is real, that someone will hurt my kid." Elijah stared at her silently with wide eyes. "Could you see that when you came up here?"

"You know what happened wasn't your fault, right?"

Dakota tightened her jacket, chill bumps showing up on her skin. "I know it's not my fault, but it is my fault that my baby is in danger every second of it's unborn life and I'm too weak— to human to protect her."

"What are you saying?"

"Remember the deal we made a few months ago?" She took his silence as affirmation, her face set with determination.

"Does Niklaus know about your decision to become a vampire again?"

She broke eye contact, lips momentarily pursed, arms crossed over her chest. "What he doesn't know won't kill him. You should be honored, 'lijah. I chose you to change me."

"I was wondering why you did. "

"Because, you're the only one I trust not to die for pissing someone off and killing your entire bloodline."

Elijah straightened out his black suit, nodding his head slightly. "Fair enough."

"Why the hell are you in my house?"

"Please don't yell, you'll raise your blood pressure and it's not safe for the baby."

Dakota put her hand over her stomach, Brown eyes squinted at the redhead on her couch. "Since when did you give a rats ass about the well-being of my baby?"

"I know you don't trust me and I've given you no reason to, but please know all I want to do is help. I want no harm to come towards your child."

It was hard to mistake the truth in her voice but Dakota wasn't fully convinced. "What's in it for you?"

"Honestly? A grimrore."

"Right," Dakota recalled Klaus' plan to give Genevieve the grimrore or in exchange for a hundred or so moonlight rings. "I heard about that. So, what's in the grimrore that you need so bad you're willing to be Klaus' bitch."

Green eyes darted away from the pregnant woman. "The Original witches spells are authentic—never seen before by anyone. It'd be an honor to see them."

"Before you die?"

"Excuse me?"

Dakota rolled her eyes. "I'm not blind. That bossy Devereux daughter is very sneaky and she's got a knack for dragging people into danger for her cause."

"How'd you know?"

Picturing an old memory of the straight brown hair and two brothers fighting over her made Dakota cringe. "Reminds me of someone I used to know. I'm familiar with her type," Using her pointer finger she carelessly gestured to the large bruise forming on Genevieve's jaw. "— their collateral and it'd be in your best interest to kill her before she gets too sure of herself."

The witch looked up at Dakota, her hand coming up to cover her mark. "Is that what you did?"

"Yes."

"And how'd that work out for you?"

"Pretty well, until she came back to life."

Genevieve let out a laugh, eyes crinkling up at the sides and she regretted getting to know Dakota because although the brunette was a little cockier than she usually tolerated, she didn't deserve the fate the Genevieve would give her.

Heels clicked loudly in the hallway, catching Dakota's attention and when she followed the noise only being met with both Mikaelson brothers escorting the new leader of the humans, she tensed. "What's going on here?"

Mischievous brown eyes met Dakota's. "You're fiancé and I have made a deal."

"On?"

"Sweetheart," Klaus Took over, beckoning the brunette over." Ms. Correa is known for her speedy deliverance of rare items and it seems Marcel has stolen what I needed, so I now need her."

A perfectly manicured hand was outstretched for Dakota and was given a firm shake. "Nice to meet you, and congrats on your recent engagement."

"Thank you." Looking past, Dakota took in the men in suits behind her. "You brought extras too."

"My apologies for my lack and informing you, but these are my brothers and they accompany me during all business transactions."

Klaus smiled at his guests, greeting them all with welcome he didn't usually have. "No apology needed, I suppose I shall get used to seeing their faces for future transactions as well."

"Indeed," Francesca Correa speaks. "now know this, while I am aware of the impending war on yourself and Marcel, I've decided to help you."

"Why?"

Correa smiled at Dakota's business like tone. "I know the winning side when I see one and I'd rather my family be on their side than with Marcel and his stray dogs."

Pleased with the response, Dakota nods. "Good choice. So what's in the box?"

"Not enough for an army," She admits, handing The velvet bag of black rocks to Klaus.

Elijah steps forward, unaware of the plan his brother had. "What's in it for the human faction? Not just your family alone."

"An allegiance to the ruling class."

"If only everyone shared your reason."

Correa suddenly loses her smile. "If only, but I'll have you know, Marcel will most likely come after me just for meeting with you."

Klaus fake surprise. "You're worried he'll attack you."

"I'm saying, it'll be in our best interest to combine our efforts."

Taking a moment to think it over, Niklaus gives her a nod. "The more bodies protecting the compound, the better."
