Chapter 21: The Royal Family

{D. K}

"It's beautiful here," Dakota gawked in awe, her pretty brown eyes taking in the home she would be living in. The whole house was exquisite and the new images never stopped coming before her. "You lived here before?"

Klaus nodded, running his fingers over the walls and refamiliarizing himself with the surroundings around him that he built from the ground many years ago. "This was my home, and now it's ours."

"Where is everyone at? I'd expect you to have kept at least some of Marcel's minions."

"Dining room," Klaus responded, taking her hand and leading her to that very place. "—we're having a celebratory dinner in honor of the new Royal Family."

Dakota rolled her eyes, her hand squeezing his a bit tighter at his teasing words. "Dick. Only you would host a dinner in honor of yourself."

A loud, boisterous laugh flowed from his mouth, drawing attention from all of the vampires who sat at the table. Some seemed shocked that Klaus was laughing at something other than ones misfortune and they seemed even more shocked when they saw the possessive hand that rested on Dakota's waist. "Good evening, everyone." He pulled out the chair beside him, allowing her to sit beside him. "We're here tonight because of a change in leadership. And while I can understand that there will be confusion and question, I'd like to take some time to work out the kinks."

The guests remained quiet, except for one, Marcel's right hand. He had perfect brown skin and bouncy curly hair that surrounded his head like a halo. "Who's she?"

"Dakota King," The hybrid announced proudly, looking at the woman beside him with loving eyes that not a single person in the room missed. "This gorgeous woman is carrying my child. Now, I trust you won't harm her, because if you shall the result will be great."

"What is she?"

Dakota took a sip of the sparkling water that was in her glass—a substitute for wine, and spoke. "Sitting right here. For nine hundred years, I was a vampire, until recently I died and was turned into a human by a witch on the Other Side."

Marcel's eyes squinted critically at the information revealed. "So you were a vampire, you weren't lying?"

"No, I wasn't lying."

The tension in the room was thick, and the conversation slowly died down until there was an eerie silence. Vampires rolled their daylight rings around in circles on their fingers, eyes shifted from Klaus to Dakota, analyzing their every feature intently. "Let's eat, shall we?"

Four humans came to the table, taking a knife from their breast pocket and slit their wrists. They held their arms over bowls and allowed the crimson liquid to pour steadily into the bowls.

The unusual feeling of sickness made Dakota's stomach churn at the sight of the substance that once satisfied a burning desire in her throat. "I'm going to our room, I'll eat up there." Klaus gave her a kiss, allowing her to leave and he didn't stop following her figure until he could no longer see her.

         "You love her."

         "I'd say so."

Dakota walked further into the large mansion deeper than she had with Klaus earlier that morning, finding new passageways and secret hideaways. Dark tunnels that led to hidden doors that led outside were found and at the end of the tunnel, Dakota could see the outlines of two bodies that she was incredibly familiar with. "'lijah? Bekah?"

"Shhh," They whispered, looking around for any signs of movement. The siblings were basically shunned from Klaus' presence after their betrayal towards him. "—we need to talk to you about Klaus."

"Look guys, you didn't just betray him," Dakota spoke easily, keeping her voice low like the others. "—you tried to kill him."

"You knew about it, Dakota, you're not innocent either."

Dakota crossed her arms over her chest, thin eyebrows raised. "I'm the one who warned him to watch his back because his little sister was conspiring against him."

"You've changed," Rebekah finally spoke, her voice light.

"I'm not what I used to be, I've grown and adapted to the new circumstances and I can't afford to ruin that."

"So you're just going to stay here with him? We've been forbidden from this home and Nik has people taking the furniture from the only place we have left."

The brunette shrugged not sure what to say and used a few fingers to toss a large chunk of hair from her shoulder. "I don't know what to tell you, there isn't anything I can do for you, Bekah. You sided with Marcel to take down your own family, your own flesh and blood. "

"He's done the same to us for centuries!" She yelled, quickly lowering her voice when she remembered she wasn't supposed to be there and if she was found out she'd be in trouble. "I have spent more of my life in a box than I did actually living, whenever I tried to leave, make a life for myself, he betrayed me over and over again. I needed closure Dakota, you of all people should know how it feels to need stability."

"I do," Dakota agreed, stepping back with one foot. "—and I've finally got it. Which is why I can't let it go."

Elijah had his hands tucked in his pockets, silently listen to the conversation, and he now decided to put in a word. "We came here because we thought you'd understand."

"I thought you would too. I guess we all were wrong."
