Chapter 38: Family Comes First
{K.M}
Klaus knew she was hiding something the moment she walked through the doors, her face downcast and solemn. "Is something wrong with the baby?"
"No," She looked his way, answering hastily, her head shaking in denial. "The baby's perfect. I'm just a little tired." Dakota knew he'd prod, keep pressing the matter until she broke. "Did you find it?"
"Find what?" Elijah steps in the room, his black suit scorched, burnt to a crisp and completely ruined beyond repair.
Dakota walked closer to him, her eyes wide with worry. "What happened to you?"
"There was an attack on the werewolves today," A brief look was exchanged between Dakota and her fiancé. "There are very angry and many lives were lost, I believe it was Marcel's doing."
"It wasn't," The woman interjected. "I was with Marcel, there's no way he himself did it, but there's a possibility one of his followers did."
"Followers?"
Dakota nods, giving her future brother-in-law space. "When Marcel and I spoke today, he mentioned how there'd be a fight, one so bad he tried to give me a bag filled with money to get the baby and I to safety."
"Then we too must prepare," Elijah declares. "I went to speak with Pastor Kieran today about the treaty only to find he'd died, he seemed to have done it to himself."
"He was still alive?" Dakota seemed genuinely surprised he hadn't done anything sooner, the cruelty of magic being enough to drive even a said to sin. "Not to sound insensitive but if I were under a hex of such torture, I'd have ended it far sooner."
Deciding not to answer, Elijah took off his suit jacket, throwing the few scraps of fabric into the fireplace without a care. "Who do you deem responsible of the attack?"
Klaus spoke up first, a very specific red-head sticking in his mind. One who was particularly vengeful and sneaky. "I have an idea of who'd want harm to the wolves."
"Who?"
Picking up his keys from the counter, Klaus walked past, determination on his face. "Don't you worry, I'm going to pay a visit to a certain woman who fancies sacrifices."

Elijah and Dakota sat beside one another on the couch, her hand resting over her belly while she stared blankly at the TV playing some random show that was supposed to be comedic but she didn't have the energy to laugh. "I just want to keep my baby safe, 'lijah. That's all I want."
He pulled something from his jacket pocket, a fresh suit adorned his body which confused Dakota because it was nearly two in the morning and she never once saw the man wearing actual pajamas. A leather bound book was placed in her hand, a thick piece of string holding it together. "I know Klaus couldn't have been alone with the wolf alliance and if you believe this will work, you do what you must."
"Elijah," She called out to him, pulling him back by his wrist before he could leave her alone in the all to empty house. "How are you so good at this? Making all the right decisions and keeping everyone safe?" Dakota held a blank stare while she opened up to him, truly being honest about herself and what she fought for. "I don't care about them, even as a human myself, every other person out there is disposable to me as long as my family is safe."
He poured himself a glass of scotch, sitting comfortably beside her. The man was quiet for a long moment before he inhaled a deep breath and looked over at her. "I have tried to make peace with the city, be fair to all and make them feel safe but the rifts between them all run far deeper than even I can fix."
"So, what are you saying?"
"Everyone else is sticking beside their families, I find it would be best I do the same. It's not like any of them are risking their life to make deals with witches and wolves to keep me safe."
"Us," Dakota laughed, truly finding the look on Elijah's face more amusing rather than serious and macho like he and his brother tried to appear. "Keep us safe."
Light footsteps entered the conversation, the two quieting down when Klaus walked in with a grin on his face, his eyes showing that business was handled well. "What do we have here?"
Dakota handed over the grimrore, making room on the couch for Klaus. "I've thought things over, Niklaus and I have decided that maybe you're intentions weren't as selfish as I had assumed."
"It has nothing to do with me."
"I know that now," Elijah assured, setting his empty glass down on the table beside him. One hand was rested behind the couch while the other rested comfortably on his leg. "My intentions have always been to unite us as a family and I believe if we wish to stay safe, we will fight like one."
Klaus grinned, a look exchanged between he and his fiancé. "Someone once told me family is power, let's show them how true that is."
