It was the middle of the night and I heard screaming. I jumped out of bed and opened my door. I saw the living room light on from downstairs. I tip toed down the steps to find my parents arguing.

"Am I suppose to just accept that?" she said.

"I'm not telling you to. Look I'm trying to fix this"

"I don't think this can even be fixed" she said. Her voice getting calmer. Like when you're tired and want to give up.

I quickly ran back up stairs to my room before they saw me. I found Sam sitting on my bed.

"Sam why are you up?"

"Something loud woke me and I got scared"

"You wanna sleep with me tonight?"

He nodded.

The next morning I went downstairs to find my Mom making breakfast. Sam was still fast asleep in my bed.

"Mom, what are you doing home ?"

"Oh, I'm going in a little late today" she said barely even glancing at me.

"Are you ok, I heard voices last night"

"Yea. Me and your dad were talking when he came home from work" she said.

"Ok" I said clearly seeing she didn't want to talk.

"Your school is closed today. I would tell Liam not to come but I think he's already on his way"

"Why is it closed?" I asked getting a plate

"Something about a gas leak" she said. "They said its gonna be closed for the rest of the week"

"Thats the best news I've heard all week" I smiled.

I saw actual smile forming on her face.

"If Liam comes while I'm in the shower, he's welcome to breakfast" she said walking out of the kitchen.

My was already gone and Liam had just arrived. Sam and I were in the kitchen eating breakfast while he watched Paw Patrol on the iPad.

"Morning" he said with a surprised look. "What are you doing here?"

"School is closed for the rest of the week. There was a gas leak"

"Cool" he smiled.

Sam was at school and Liam and I were in the living room watching Friends.

"Favorite character?" He asked.

"Chandler"

"You?"

"Rachel" he smiled.

I rolled my eyes. "I wonder why"

"I'm freezing" he suddenly said.

"I thought it was just me. Maybe there's a window open upstairs"

We both went upstairs to find my parents bedroom door open. I walked inside and saw the window open.

"What are these papers on the floor" he asked from the doorway.

"The breeze probably knocked them off her desk" I said picking them up.

As I scooped them up I read them and my heart stopped. My mouth slowly fell open.

These were divorce papers.
