Robbins spent the next hour at her desk looking through the files of suspects. She was beyond exhausted, running on barely three hours of sleep from the previous night. There was just so much going on that she didn't have time to sleep. Ethan went missing yesterday and Robbins had a feeling it was from the copycat. Then again, it could always be a sick trick by Kyle. She couldn't even keep the facts straight anymore. Luckily, there hadn't been any more murders so she had to focus on finding Kelly, Ethan, and the other missing girls. She was snapped out of her thoughts when her phone rang.
"This is Officer Robbins." She said.
"Robbins! It's Kelly. Please help me." She cried and Robbins' heart started to race.
"Kelly! Where are you?" Robbins asked.
How was Kelly calling her? Where was she? Did she escape the copycat? Robbins ran out to her car, not having time to tell anyone where she was going. She had to go find Kelly. Robbins knew Kelly was a fighter and she would escape and be free, just like a year ago. She never gave up and that's what Robbins admired most about her.
"I'm on Old Miller Road, with a hiker. Kyle is in the woods somewhere and the rest of the girls are in an underground tunnel, left to die." She said quickly.
Robbins knew how to get there but it wasn't as close to town as she would have liked. Robbins turned on her siren and sped off. She was going to save Kelly and if she couldn't, she may never see her again. Surely, Kyle wouldn't kill her, right? If Kyle was with her then that meant he was with the copycat. Were they working together? There were so many questions she wanted to ask Kelly but there was no time for that right now.
"I'm on my way, just keep heading towards town. I'm coming." Robbins said, trying to hide the excitement, but also fear in her voice.
Then Robbins almost slammed on her brakes when she heard a loud piercing scream come from the phone.
"Kelly, what's wrong?" Robbins asked.
The other end of the phone was silent except for the hushed cries coming from Kelly.
"Kelly? Are you okay?" Robbins yelled into the phone, not knowing if Kelly could hear her.
"No!" Kelly screamed.
Robbins was so confused. She needed to know what was happening. Was Kyle there? Or the copycat? Why was Kelly screaming? Was she okay? Robbins punched the gas, going as fast as she could. She was coming, Kelly just needed to stall a little bit longer.
"Hello Robbins, this is the last time you will hear Kelly's voice because we are disappearing." Kyle said.
Hearing his voice was shocking and terrifying at the same time. He was with her, he had her again. Kyle hung the phone up before she could reply. Robbins yelled in frustration. She knew by the time she got to where Kelly was, she would be gone along with the kidnapper and Kyle.
Just as she suspected, she pulled up to find a dead body of who Robbins guessed was the hiker Kelly was talking about. It had been about twenty minutes or so since Robbins had heard Kyle on the phone. They could be almost anywhere by now. What direction did they go? Where were they planning on going? She was too late. She failed Kelly once again. She bowed her head and held back tears. She was so close yet that wasn't good enough.
Robbins called for her crime scene investigators to block off the scene. It was about nine o'clock at night by the time the whole area was sealed off and the hiker's body was taken away. Robbins was exhausted and felt as if she may pass out from the lack of sleep. As she stared off into the distance, she remembered testimonies she had read before Kelly had called.
Robbins was nervous that Jim was the kidnapper. His testimony just didn't seem right. She understood what he was emotional but could that all be an act. She remembered how Kyle had tricked everyone by how he was acting. What if Jim was doing the same thing? She honestly didn't trust anyone, especially after Kyle's betrayal. How could she not be scared of every possibly? Officer Dole was the one to come up to her next, he had just gotten to the crime scene to help out. He had been at the police station working on paperwork for her.
"Kyle's prints were found on the body." He said, snapping her out of her daze.
"I can't think straight right now. I need to go home and sleep for at least an hour." Robbins said, barely keeping her eyes open.
"Yeah, yeah. I got everything covered here. Go and rest, you need it. I'll call you if we get anything." Dole said, faking a smile.
It was obvious that he was tired of working all the time. He probably hasn't slept for a while either, which made Robbins feel bad for wanting to leave. She'd let him go and sleep once she got back. Then she worried about Gary who she hadn't heard from again and seemed to disappear. Had Kyle killed him?
"I just hope Gary isn't there to greet me again." Robbins said faking a smile.
"If you want, you can crash on my couch. I'll be here or at the station for most of the night." He offered, handing her his house key.
"Thank you, Jake. You're the best. I'll see you later and don't forget to call if anything happens." Robbins smiled.
"No problem." Dole grinned.
She leaned over and gave him a hug, wrapping her arms around his muscular body. If they hadn't been friends and worked together then Robbins would consider dating him. He had short, spiked dark brown hair that Robbins found attractive. Then there was his chocolate brown eyes that could make her melt. But despite those feelings, she refused to act on them. She didn't want things to be weird if dating didn't work out. She didn't want to mess up their friendship. Dole and Robbins had become really close since the Olive Kidnappings and now this case brought them even closer.
"Call me if the search and rescue team finds the kidnapper's hiding spot where the girls are hidden. I don't want anyone to go in there unless I'm there." Robbins said.
"Yes, yes. I know, don't even breathe unless you know about it." Dole laughed.
"Shut up, Dole." Robbins laughed as she turned to leave.
She got in her car and started to drive to his house. She was happy she didn't have to go home where Kyle and Gary could be. They both knew her address so who knows who could be waiting for her. She arrived at his house, which was a small one-story house.
From being in his house before, she knew it was a two-bedroom house that seemed small on the outside but on the inside, it was huge. She walked inside and turned on all the lights. She had to make sure she was alone and no one had broken into the house. She was just being paranoid.
Before she went to sleep, she wanted to find some medicine to help her pounding headache and hopefully help her sleep some. She walked into the bathroom by the kitchen to find nothing. She knew Dole had a bathroom in his room, so she walked in there to see if there was any medicine there. She was sure that he wouldn't care for her looking through his medicine cabinet. She just needed some medicine anyway. She opened the cabinet door and gasped at what she saw.
