Robbins stared wide-eyed in the cabinet. This couldn't be true, there had to be an explanation for this. As Robbins tried to wrap her head around this, she couldn't think of a good excuse. In the cabinet was fake contacts, prosthetic skin, and other items for a disguise but that wasn't what freaked Robbins out the most.
As she slowly removed some medicine bottles, it revealed several pictures of Kelly that were hidden in the back. Robbins knew that if she wanted to believe that Dole was the kidnapper, she needed more proof. Maybe there was an explanation he could give Robbins that would make sense. Dole couldn't really be the copycat.
She walked into his room, her hands trembling. She started to search his drawers to see if she could find anything else. It was weird for her to be searching his house but what she saw made him a lead suspect. How could she have been so stupid to not even question her own partner? If this was all true then Dole had betrayed Robbins, lied straight to her face every day and even tried to pin Jim and Ethan on the kidnappings. How long had be planned this?
Robbins was also worried because Ethan was still missing which meant Dole knew where he was. She sighed. Dole wasn't the kidnapper until she found proof of it. He was Robbins' closest friends, there's no way this could be true. He was so close to Kelly and Robbins, he wouldn't do this to them. She checked under the bed, pulling out a medium sized lockbox. Of course, there was a lock on it but Robbins pulled out a bobby pin from her hair and slowly picked the lock. Once it opened, tears filled her eyes as she stared into the box.
She gasped, holding back her tears. Inside the box laid what looked to be hundreds of pictures. She carefully examined the first photo, seeing Kelly and Ethan walking together outside Kelly's house. A large grin was plastered on her face as the couple held hands and walked. Robbins flipped through a few more pictures to find most of them were of Kelly. Then pictures of the all the missing girls started to appear. He was the copycat, this was proof.
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she saw herself in the upcoming pictures. It was like he was always watching her. All of the times she thought he had gone home to rest, he was probably kidnapping and killing girls. Robbins removed all the pictures to find several other things.
The first thing was a blueprint of what looked to be a large building. As she read it, she figured out that it was the Denver Prison. Kyle and Dole had been planning this ever since Kyle was arrested. What made Dole decide to do this over a year ago? It didn't make any sense to her.
She felt a sick feeling in her stomach and wanted to puke everything up that was in her stomach. Everything seemed to get dizzy around her. This wasn't happening. How could she not know her best friend was a kidnapper and killer?
She looked in the box to find that there was a bottle of chloroform and a knife in the box. This proved everything. Just as she was about to close the box, she saw a folded piece of notebook paper. She began to read the note slowly and as she did, tears poured down her cheeks.
Dear Robbins,
I will probably never give this to you but I just want to write this because I can't help but smile when I re-read this letter. I need to tell you something that I never can tell you face to face. Robbins, I am madly in love with you. Ever since we met, I had fallen for you over and over again, not being able to control my emotions. I know that me becoming what I am and doing what I have will really hurt you if you find out.
There is no way you could ever understand how I'm feeling. Trust me, I know you couldn't possibly like me the way I like you. I was lonely and Kyle came alone and we created our master plan. I'm so sorry, please forgive me. Our friendship means the world to me. I just wish we could be more than that. I love your beautiful silk, brown hair and your chocolate brown eyes that make my heart melt as you gaze into mine.
I lay in bed every night, think of how lucky I am to spend every day with you, even if it's not the best of days. I love being able to comfort you when you have a bad day. You are dedicated to being a police officer and I admire that. I wish I could just be happy like you but it's just difficult. God, how I love your smile.
I'm not exactly sure how to tell you how sorry I am for betraying you and lying to you. I hated it every second that I had to lie but it was for the bigger picture. I enjoy what I do and I know you will never understand how I could do that. Please don't hate me. You are my best friend and probably the love of my life.
I can't torture myself anymore by seeing you every day, knowing I can't be enough of a man to tell you face to face about how I feel. I hope one day I can actually tell you how I feel about you because you are all I think about and care about. You're my angel. I love you, Christi Robbins.
Love, Jake Dole.
"Damn it, Jake." Robbins cried, trying to force herself to stop crying.
It was too painful to not cry. He admitted he was the kidnapper and that he was in love with her. How dare he beg for her forgiveness? Robbins had never felt so betrayed and hurt in her life. How could he have hidden that he loved her? Why didn't he just come out and tell her? She felt hurt that Dole would do this but yet again, she wasn't supposed to read the letter. She wasn't supposed to know any of this.
How was she supposed to confront him? She quickly placed all of the photos and the letter back in the box. Once everything was in there, she quickly picked up the box and rushed to her car. She needed to tell everyone who Dole was even if it hurt her in the process. How could she turn in her best friend? He had Kelly with him and that bastard acted like he cared about her. Robbins wondered if Kelly even knew who he was. If she did, she was probably heartbroken.
She ignored the guilt feeling in the pit of her stomach and tried to focus on the road. She knew she had to call Dole and see where he was. If he was still at the crime scene, she would meet him there. Before he could run, she would have to handcuff him and confront him about the box. She dialed his number, waiting for him to answer.
"Hello?" Dole answered.
"Uh hi, it's Robbins. W-where are you at? I just couldn't sleep. How's the case going?" She asked trying not to think of who he was.
"There was another body that turned up so I'm at the new crime scene. Not sure who the victim is yet." He said.
"Okay, I'll come there then. I need to talk to you in person." She said, trying not to sound as nervous.
"I'll text you the address and you can just meet me there. Is that okay?" He asked.
Not wanting him to think something was up with her, she agreed to meet him at wherever he was. She didn't believe that he was at a new crime scene because someone else would have called and told her about the body. Robbins regretted leaving without any warning or telling anyone where she was going but no one could contact Dole and tell him anything. She needed to have the element of surprise. She also didn't want any other officers to shoot and kill Dole. She could talk to him, convince him to come with her. She just prayed that everything would be okay and Dole wouldn't hurt her.
