I walk into first period with nobody paying attention to me, as usual.

I take my seat and try to slow down my breathing. Nobody ever says how nerve-wracking it is to be wearing short-sleeves for the first time around your peers.

Class goes by like normal and the bell finally rings. My breathing is back to normal and I have calmed down.

One class down.

As I walk out of the room I feel someone pull on my arm from behind me.

They keep ahold of my arm as I turn around, their eyes are attached to my forearm, not able to look away. She’s staring right at them. It’s the blonde that sits behind me.

My cheeks began to heat and I pull my arm away as quickly as possible.

“You- uhm- you forgot your- uhm, pencil.” She stutters and puts the pencil in my hand before practically sprinting down the hall.

I feel my heart beat through my whole body but try to ignore it. No matter how hard this is I have to go through with it.

I continue to walk to my next class with as much composure as I can muster.

The rest of the day goes by without anyone noticing my arms and before I know it I am walking into the therapy session for the younger kids.

I am nervous but knowing Andy will be there makes it easier for me to stay calm.

As soon as I walk in I see the familiar boy, Jack, that I saw last session. He sits quietly at one of the chairs picking at his nails.

I take a seat next to him while people are still filing in. Neither of us speak, we just let the silence fill the air.

Only minutes later, everyone is seated and a thick and awkward air floats around us.

Andy is the first to break the silence. “So does anyone want to share any stories to start us off?”

Kids go around telling morbid stories, some too far-fetched to believe others terrifying.

However, Jack stays quiet. He continues to pick at his nails but he is no longer lowering his vision, instead he is looking right at who is talking, concern etched in his tiny yet familiar features.

He looks as interested as I or Andy appears. And just as mature as well.

His eyes and his mouth tell two different stories and for some reason I can’t help but watch him. There is something about him that draws me to him.

I feel the need to wrap him up and tell him everything will be okay. That may have to do with the likeness of our stories but it doesn’t change the impulse.

The time is soon up before he is even asked to open his mouth. Everyone slowly exits and an urge is tugging at my heart to talk to the boy. But I feel a hand on my back before his name leaves my lips.

I turn to see a small girl with blonde pigtails, “My mom isn’t here. Can I use your phone to call her?”

I hand her my phone and by the time she is done Jack is no longer in sight.

I sigh and walk outside to meet Jesse in his car.

“Hey babe.” He greets.

“Hi” I respond but I am barely listening. My mind stuck on the young boy.

“What’s wrong?” He questions.

“This boy.” I state not being able to finish.

“What boy?” His attitude immediately changes.

“This boy in the group. I can’t stop thinking about him. His name is Jack and his brother beats on him. I can’t stop thinking about the resemblance of our stories. The kid is so small and innocent and every part of me wants to take care of him.” My mind wonders about his brother and what a terrible person he is.

How could you abuse someone so innocent and pure. Questions pile up in my head.

But Jesse stays quiet.

“Lets change the subject, sorry, I’m sure you don’t want to hear about it.” And although I mean it I do want to talk to Jesse about it. But it seemed to rub him the wrong way so I decide to brush it under the carpet.

“Do you want to stop for some ice cream or something like that?” he asks.

I agree and we decide on where to go.

An awkward silence fills the car. “Are you okay?” I question, kind of afraid of his answer.

“I think we need to talk.” He remarks.

The pit in my stomach grows. The fear of what he is going to say flows through every part of me.

Is he going to break up with me? Does he not love me anymore? Did he cheat on me?

We pull into the parking lot and my heart beat thumps through my body for the thousandth time today.
