Celebrities
I realised this a while ago. Celebrities have this weird, magical effect on people. For example, I'm going to tell you a story...
Are you sitting comfortably?
Alright; one night, I was on twitter. It was 1am and the Phoneshow had just finished. Jeremy - the co-host before Chris came back - tweeted 'Goodnight people. Hope you enjoyed the show. If you weren't listening, go screw yourself!'
And I replied to that. And you know what Jeremy did? He favourited my tweet.
And do you know what effect that had on me? Well, apart from the inner screaming fangirl, I no longer fell like a worthless piece of crap. I felt like I mattered for once.
Why do celebrities have this effect on us? Is it because we look up to them like Gods? Is it in our genes? Does it have anything to do with Aspergers?
No, the answer to that is no. It has nothing to do with AS.
Anyway, isn't it weird how a single favourited tweet can make someone feel like they finally matter? I mean, if you look at it with a literal mind, it's just a few pixels on an LCD screen.
Do celebrities have this effect on us because they're rare and fans are all over the place? Does it have anything to do with popularity? Is it because we've been 'singled out' in a way? Is it because they saw our twitter names?
Maybe it is because they saw our twitter names. They know we exist.
It's true; we look up to celebrities like they're Gods. I mean, there are millions of Directioners all over the globe who worship Harry.
I saw a picture on Facebook the other day that had a picture of smosh, PewDiePie and Shane Dawson on it. And the caption read "You may call them 'just YouTubers'. But I think without them, many people in the world would be dead by now"
What this means is that there are so many suicidal teens out there. These people have changed others' lives. You reading this are a member of a fandom, don't deny it. Lets take Harry Styles; imagine if he retweeted you on twitter? Or followed you? What would go through your head?
'Why did he retweet me? I'm not special, I'm not different from anyone else, I'm just an insecure teenager who believes what others say! There's nothing special about me, so why did he retweet me? Am I special in any way? Oh, I must be because he retweeted me!'
That's what would go through your head - if you're a Directioner.
And that's exactly what went through my head, by the way.
It makes perfect sense doesn't it? Celebrities have this magical effect on people - and some celebrities definitely have saved lives. People who are insecure will look for other people to tell them they're special. And if a celebrity steps in first, it has an even greater effect.
Do you get what I'm on about here?
You may think I'm weird for taking a screen cap of the tweet and setting it as my lock screen, but you would do the same. Don't deny it. But, I set the screen cap as my lock screen, not because it was a rare fangirl moment, but because it reminded me that if Jeremy Dixon himself favourited my tweet, then I'm not a useless piece of crap. Do you see what I'm on about here? I didn't treasure the memory because of the fangirl side to it, it was because-
You get the point. Celebrities have this strange, magical effect on us. Period.
Celebrities definitely have saved lives. More lives than they can imagine. Many, many, many people wouldn't be alive to this day if it wasn't for celebrities. Take AmazingPhil - well known for his kindness and innocence. In fan fiction, Phil is always portrayed as the kind, gentle, loving, caring person who will always be there for you and you can call him at 4am and he will talk things through. That is how his character is portrayed.
I can only hope that if one day I become famous - I kind of wanna be a YouTuber - that my character will be portrayed like Phil's in fan fiction. I can only hope.
In fact, I am the one friend who will talk things through with you at 4am. I am the one friend who gives exert advise on everything. I am the friend who will sit patiently as you spill your heart out. I will dry your tears, hand you a tissue so you can blow your nose. I will let you stay the night if you can't go home. I will make you a cup of hot chocolate and let you sleep in my bed while I take the floor. I will tell you you're wanted and loved. I will tell you 'he's not worth your pain'. I will tell you 'you're better than them'. I won't ever loose my patience with someone who's broken and needs help. I will say 'I know how you feel' and genuinely mean it, because I've been through it. I will tell those bullies to f*** themselves for getting you down. I will sit with you and not let you out of my sight until you feel better. I will share my lunch and if you don't have any, I'll give you all of it.
What the hell does that have to do with anything?
And if I ever become even remotely famous, I will make sure to retweet and follow as many people as I can. I will make sure to tell depressed teens that they matter and the world wouldn't be the same without them. I will make sure to meet and greet as many fans as I can. Sign autographs until my hand hurts, take pictures until my USB is full. I will probably retweet more than I will tweet. I will follow back everyone and I will-
You get my point.
If any celebrities mentioned are reading this - ok why first of all - then I hope you know how you've changed people's lives for the better. You've saved so many lives; you've made that insecure 15 year old you just followed feel special and wanted. She was going to cut later on, she was going to head into that school and get kicked to the curb. Do you know how much of a difference you can make to someone's life? How special you can make someone feel?
I want you to arrange a spontaneous meet and greet. I want you to follow back as many people as you can. I want you to let people know that they're wanted on this Earth. So many people die each year because they felt no one would miss them. I want you to tell them they're being ridiculous. That people will miss them.
Isn't it weird that this is the effect celebrities have on people?
Think about it.
And even though Jeremy won't read this, I still want to say thanks. For making me smile when I was sad with your unique humour. For giving me something to listen to when I had nothing better to do. But most importantly however; for making me feel like I was wanted just by tapping on a screen.
It's the effect celebrities have on us.
